I have seriously been considering a new set of Irons.  Was thinking about trying out the JPX 800Pro's, AP1's, and  i15's.  Just found someone selling a set of mx 200's on Craigslist here locally.  Excellent condition 3-PW for $160.  Shafts are Dynamic Gold SL.  I see on True Temper site that those shafts are not a high launching shaft, but have read reviews that the clubs tend to be high launching.  These are standard with lofts 2degrees strong.  Thoughts?  I am a 9-10 HC, and decent ball striker.  Struggle with 3-4 irons.  Currently play Ping i3 oversized.   Thanks in advance.

Every club you list is great, but they fall into a variety of different forgiveness categories and ball flight categories, so I need more information to help you.

What are you looking for in your new irons?  What do you like and dislike about your current ones?  Any ball flight problems with your current ones that you're hoping the new ones will alleviate?

I can say that I absolutely love my MX-200.  I find them pretty high launching, very forgiving and with a great feel.  I use the XP shafts in stiff and have been quite happy with them.

My current irons have a low launch that I would like to improve upon.  They seem to be shorter than any irons I have hit the last few years as well.  Not getting any younger (42) , so the low flight with shorter distances leaves me with a chip and a put almost always when approaching with 5 iron or longer.  Besides that, I just have the itch.  These were my clubs at a 27 HC, and now play to a 9-10 and was a 6 two years ago (back surgery 1.5 years ago).  Swing is not the same since surgery and wont be.  It is now 2 degrees different in lie.

I definitely understand getting new clubs at a lower handicap -- I remember my switch when I went from 36 to ~23.

The MX-200s seem a good deal if they're in good shape.  If Mizuno holds a demo/fitting day near you, and you have the irons, they can suggest re-shafting (and possibly bending) options that will make them play like new and properly fitted clubs;  the suggestion is free, but the materials (new shafts, grips, some adjustment) will probably run you $150-200.   If the lofts are two degrees strong, however, they may launch a little lower than normal MX-200s, but probably pretty high.  The MX series were very high launch, very forgiving clubs.  IIRC, they had some of the lowest VCOG of any irons.  But even without the re-fitting, I think you'll do well with the MX-200s, although I don't know for certain.  Any way to demo them, such as a golf shop with range, before you buy?

All companies who make the clubs you suggest - and many who don't - will fit you for free for new irons.  Ping, in particular, has a huge program for this, although Mizuno has made a huge advance in it with their swing analyzer.   Each of the options you suggest will be high-launching (Ping's players' irons, such as the i-series, are built to be incredibly playable).  The fitters may also suggest a combination that may be better for you;  for example, I have MP-irons with medium-launch shafts (KBS Tour) and I hit them rather high.

    • Going to go against the grain a bit here and say that pain isn't as severe as we think it is sometimes.  A lot of times if something has been there for a long time it is really neurological.  Unless a sports med tells you it's likely to tear I would keep going with physio until a doctor tells you not to.  Good luck
    • I just wanted to post an update here.. so the person telling me that information was incorrect. They mixed up two of the courses that we play during our competition rounds and the one we played last weekend was NOT a non-smoking course.  I was also wrong in thinking that he was a member of said club, but he wasn't.. he's a member of a completely different club in our tournament pool.   The course that we will play next weekend is the one with the strict smoking ban and they have stated this clearly in their local rules.  The main reason for this is that there is a very high risk of forest fires in the area where this course is located at, so it's not to promote "health and wellbeing", but purely based on safety.
