I can't recommend the Wilson Staff FYbrid enough.  I've got the 19.5* model, and as I've said many times on this board, it's the best club purchase of many I've made over the last two years.  I use it in exactly the type of situations you're describing-it feels point and shoot like a 4 or 5 iron, but goes 1 or 2 iron distance.  I've choked down on the grip and taken an easy 70% swing to hit it as little as 170 yds, and I'vd gripped it and ripped it for a few 240 yd+ approach shots and a couple 250 yd tee shots.  With my swing speed (driver 104-107 or so) it averages probably 225-230.

At my homecourse we have two challenging par 3's one of 235 yds and another long one of 205 yds. ....... the shorter one is a solid 3i for me on most days, but the longer requires a carry of at least 210 yds to clear a lake and downslope to get up to green level ...... so no matter what I try or force with the 3i I almost never get it on the green ....... 3W is too long or choking down an inch, might get it up and running over.

Some of the young guys overhere reach it with a 3i or even a 4i ......... making a par on this hole is vital for a good round, but it is so easy to collect a double at this hole.......

So I need a 220-230 yds club ..... 5W or something like a 2i or Hybrid......... dispersion wise ...... I would think ..... 2i

The hybrid and 5W will be easier to hit, but have a larger dispersion and will have way more uses .........

Decisions, decisions, decisions .........

Yepp the FY is a great club, but I don't like the looks ...... it is more like a slightly oversize 5W with a shorter shaft, at least for me it is.......

I went to my clubfitter this morning, talked about on what I was looking for, also talked about some older models as he has been a Titleist fitter for quite a long time now........ he said that the current Titleist hybrids are more and more made for the average hacker instead of for the players iron golfer looking for a gap bridge between the 3i and 3W.

He gave me a cup of coffee and went into his workshop, about 10 minutes later he came back with a 585H 19* with NV 85 S and a new grip to my specs (new decade midsize/1 extra tape), and said it was toooooo hard for the average Joe.

I had to pay a few bucks for the grip only, for a good customer he said ........

    • that is an excellent approach. I did that with my last set. I made a few 7 irons from different heads and shafts. Getting a feel for how they play on the course is the right idea. Let us know how it goes.
    • I’m glad the USGA booted some of the hecklers. It’s getting out of hand. I wish the networks wouldn’t mic the crowd to give those idiots a platform.
    • New member here, and I have decided to upgrade my clubs. I have been playing for a long time but these last 10 years I have had to put four kids through college. So I've played a few rounds a year and some years have not played at all. I am currently playing Titleist 716 AP2's with Rifle 6.5 steel shafts and Winn grips. I used to hit my 7 iron around 165 yds until just 5 years ago. I turned 62 this year and noticed I can barely get my 7 iron to 145 yds. I went for a fitting to try out some new player distance irons. I don't think I need game improvement irons because I'm pretty straight and rarely try to work a ball (if I'm working a ball, then I most definetely did something wrong to get there). I tried a bunch of irons (Callaway, Mizuno, PXG, Taylormade, Srixon, Ping, and Titleist) and I kept coming back to the Ping and Titleist. They just felt right and really looked good when lining up a shot. The Ping, by far, went the longest of all the irons. The Titleist was a close second in distance. Both felt buttery smooth through impact. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with these irons. I was getting 160 yds with a nice smooth swing (81 mph swing speed). I know I'm asking a lot of my clubs but my last fitting was 27 years ago and I ended up with some Cleveland TA3's or TA2's forged irons with Dynamic Gold S300 (swing speed 87 mph). I really love the feel of my AP2's and the place I'm going to purchase from is going to make a 7 iron in both Ping and Titleist for me to test on real grass. I'm pretty certain it's going to be either one. They're both identical in price for a set of 5-PW. I'm going to forego a 4 iron and get another 4 hybrid to go along with my 3 hybrid. Any and all replies are welcome.
    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
