Which blades to get? Titleist or Mizuno?

Hi

I am looking to get some cheapish second hand blades.

having tried and liked MP33's before its between them and some Titleist 690MB or 695MB from what I can see.

what would people recommend?

I am ideally not looking to spend more than £100, and ebay seems to be the place to find them for that cheap.

I have a 12 handicap but strike the ball really well, I dont have a swing speed but I hit a 7 iron around 170yards if that helps with the advice.

Also I currently use Mizuno Pro with reg shafts. pretty sure I need to move on to stiff shafts as I hit the ball very high.

This might seem like an odd thing to say, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're not trolling - that you really are a 12 handicap who needs stiff shafts in your blade irons.

Okay, have you looked at other brands of blades and narrowed it down to Titleist and Mizuno base on objective criteria, or are those just the two brands you've heard of?

I've owned a few sets of blades over the years and do not discount MacGregor. There are other great brands out there that make blades (Cleveland, Titleist, Mizuno, KZG, basically a whole bunch from Japan) and there are always some vintage sets out there (Ben Hogan, Ram, etc). If you find Titleist or Mizuno blades in good shape, they go quickly. Cheaper sets tend to be beaten up (bag chatter is a real problem with older Hogans).

Yeah I really do want blades, much prefer the look of them behind the ball, dont like big cavity backs and I know Im fine to hit them consistently.

I am aware of other makes, they seem less prevalent though, and on looking I have seen both Mizuno and Titleist blades quite cheap.

Most people say the MP-33 is the gold standard for Mizuno blades. I have the MP-11s and even though they look and feel at least as good as any other set of blades I've owned, I scored just as well with my old Titleists (gave them away). I prefer the look/feel/performance combination of Cleveland blades (I have the TA1s and their cavity back sisters the TA3s) but they're harder to find in A1 condition. If I had to do it all over again I'd save up and buy the Clevelands. It's your money though, so enjoy those Titleists.

[/quote] I've always been happy with Titleist irons. They're fine sticks as well. Mizuno is a good route to go as well. In my experience, the Mizunos have less "click" than Titleist irons do.

I haven't hit a softer blade yet than mid-80's era Wilson Staff Fluid Feel Tour Blades.  I bought a set recently in good shape for $39, my friend bought a set in really good shape for $99.

Last year there was a new old stock set of these Wilsons at eBay for about $300 ...... a real Bargain !

I still have my Wilson Staff Fluid Feel Tour Blades, which I bought new during my first golf life..... great irons, softer than current and maybe even a bit easier to hit than most of todays blades ...... uhh although the 3i is about as large as a ball, don't know how I was able to hit it so well 25 yrs ago......

Of the same period there are many sets on ebay ....... if you really want some clean lines ...... you'd also better look for the Ram Tour Grinds ...... PFWewww !

If you buy some Mizuno or Titleist blades for £100 and don't like them, you could sell them for......£100

There is always a market for them.

I prefer Mizuno but thats more to do with the fact my first set of clubs were Mizunos

Does anyone have much experiend with TaylorMade RAC MB's? they look pretty nice, just wonding how they compare to the others?

I found my MP-67s for 200 USD, so 100 GBP may not be completely out of the question, but I'm guessing you can't just convert the currencies and call it a day.  If you can find a set, they're great clubs.  Even with my handicap, my ball-striking hasn't suffered much since incorporating them into the bag.

Regarding vintage blades, I read that back then the preference was for flatter lie angles (I think Trevino had his bent 6 deg. flat at one time?), and I found an old set of MacGregor blades that seem to back up the preference for a flatter lie..  If that really was as common as I read about, you may want to keep an eye on that.  Can anyone confirm this?

"Better" is relative but which irons are you saying are better blades than Mizunos?

I know you're not talking about Scratch irons, because those are run of the mill blanks with decent grinds, so which irons are you referring to?

I've had my titleist's for over 5 years, and I won't get rid of them until there are no grooves. That being said, check out some wilsons, they've had great blades forever.

Both Mizuno and Titleist are excellent irons, it just depends on what kind of feel you like or are looking for. IMO, you can't go wrong with either. Having said that, I prefer Mizuno's.

It's silly to debate as there really isn't a definitive answer to which iron is better.  Both are great options.

I'm playing the Titleist ZM and I enjoy them quite a bit.  They feel crisper yet ding easier... go figure.  Really do like the sticks though.

      Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.

      Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.

      Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
