Hi All

I am soon to do a short term relocation to work at LA International airport for 2 months. Not sure if I am going to bring my clubs as yet but I may.

What courses around that area are good for a hit for an average hacker like me.

Thanks

Grant

Yes, take your clubs!

I'm glad you asked.  I was working in Torrance when I first took up golf with any amount of seriousness.  My options after work were hitting the range and then driving home in 15 minutes, or spending an hour and a half fighting the parking lot (aka 405 freeway at 5pm) to get home.

Well, it turns out that Torrance is one of, if not the, biggest city in the country without a golf course!

But it's not as bad as it sounds.  There are tons of areas around there that have golf courses.

Up in Lawndale is Alondra Golf Course - there's a regulation 18 and a par-3 18.  I don't recommend this course, even if it is where I first broke 100.  But it's golf, and hang with me, there are better courses around!  Palos Verdes has Los Verdes.  There's also Links of Victoria in Carson.  A few blocks from LAX itself is the Lakes at El Segundo, a nice par-29 executive course with a great driving range, large practice putting green, and regular food deals (especially over summer).  This is where I went when I decided not to fight the traffic.  On just the other side of the airport is Westchester Golf, which I believe is an executive 15-hole course.

Willing to travel a bit?  Long Beach is just south of you and has plenty of public courses.  Be sure to visit Tiger's childhood course.  I can also direct you to many more.

Want to come into Los Angeles itself?  Rancho Park, former home of the L.A. Open (and one of the busiest municipal courses in the country) is right here.  It's where Arnold Palmer made a 12 during said tournament once (he missed the putt for an 11).  The city and county also have plenty of public courses around.  At the north end of Los Angeles is Knollwood, where Jason Gore played as a kid.  My first time breaking 90 was that course (I was a little worse at the time than your present handicap).

Want to know more?  Something specific you're looking for?  Let me know.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks Shindig.

At this stage I am not sure of the Roster that I will be working could be weekends or it could be just Monday to Friday. Am just thinking of things to do in my time off. Actually not even sure if I will have a car during my stay.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
