Lately I have been working hard on my short game. I am positive that if my chipping improves my game will immensely improve. Through this process my chipping has improved a ton. The only concern/question that I have is it ok that it feels like I'm chipping with my trail hand(I'm left hand so my left hand). Like I said my chipping has gotten better, should I continue with what is working for me or will this be a complete catastrophe in my game later on?

i've got a 2 part answer.  the first is most people say the chipping stroke should be just like your putting stroke.  The other answer is if it's working for you then i don't see a problem with it.

IDK if that helps.

I try to keep it similar to my putting stroke, it just seems that my left hand is the one guiding the club and that the right is along for the ride. It has been working for me lately, I'm just after it nay start affecting my iron play as a whole.

You always want to keep your hands ahead of the ball when chipping.  This is easy for me if I make sure my top hand is in control.  If you don't do this, you'll need a lot more consistent precision.  I don't know what is right, but for short chips, set hands ahead and make a stroke similar to putting.

I've always had a pretty decent short game, my suggestion is to get Phil Mickelson's Secrets of the Short Game. I don't like to always suggest a book or video but in just a couple rounds played and my practice through the winter the things he talked about are simple to understand for anyone and they just work.

It also depends on the type of chipping that you are doing. If it just needs to bump and run I will use an 8 iron unless I need just a little more air time then I will use a 9 or PW, but I tip the club down and basically putt it using the toe of the club, work really, really well and is dead straight. Can't remember where I saw this technique but I am extremely happy with it. If I need more air time then I will use my 54 or 60 degree, depending on the lie and other factors and I keep my stance VERY narrow with the ball lined up with my back foot. My left hand guides the swing which helps keep me straight, in your case your right hand.

When I get further back then I go to the hinge & hold method that Mickelson talks about, though you could probably find a number of youtube videos on it.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
