One of  my golf partners used one of these this weekend.  Great idea, but I am not sure they are legal.

But I'd let him keep using it if I was playing against him. It's so localized the smallest of imperfections is going to throw it off, and it's only right there at the ball anyway. Silly.

The Rules of Golf consider this to be a major offense.  They don't even impose a stroke penalty for breaching this rule.  The only penalty is disqualification, so obviously it can't really be imposed in a casual round.  However, you can pull out your rule book and show him the error of his ways, refuse to acknowledge any score he makes using it, and generally give him a lot of crap about it.  Maybe he will get tired of hearing about it and give it up.

Like Erik says, it isn't likely that anything that small is going to be much actual help, but that doesn't make it any more legal to use.

Yeah. I'd let him keep using it because it'd be more likely to screw him up than help him. ;-) Easier to get into his wallet. Heh.
