I am looking at purchasing new irons.  I really like the Taylormade forged irons.  They are made in MC CB and MB.  I read it is possible to combine these sets into one, even read that they are designed with the same loft to allow this.  How do I go about doing this?  I want 3-4 CB/ 5,6,7 MC/ 8.9.pw MB.  I know people are gonna say with a 17 handicap you don't need that.  I am working on the handicap, I had a rough couple of years after shoulder surgery and my game is finally back on track.  Shoulder feels better handicap WILL be dropping shortly.

Find a local pro that can fit you for them and go and hit the different combinations. That way you'll get the optimum setup which may or may not be what you mentioned. You can do this combo with the Titleist MB's and CB's, Mizuno's and Bridgestone's. They all have the same loft in their different models to allow this. I was going to do this with my Bridgestone's, but ended up sticking with all CB as I wasn't getting the 3&4i and just liked the feel better than the blades. Good luck with what you end up buying.

I was just going to say.. With a 17 handicap I would stay away from anything that is forged or grind.. Those profiles are really tailored to the low handicap player.. Also take into consideration of your age, and how often to you plan on keeping a set of irons..  My handicap is 2 and when I turned 40 a moved away from my tour grind Lynx clubs and went into X-16 Calls.. The clubs were more forgiving and aged with me.. lol  I'm now 48 and looking to replace my Calls, and will stay with a set that again will age with me.. I like to get 8-10 years or more from a set..  Something to think about

Keep in mind, people sizing you for clubs are biased.. They favor their wallet moreso then your game or what is best for you.. What is best for you today, or want today, may not be what you need in a few years or longer.. Keep that in mind fellow golfer.. Example: What IF your shoulder starts to act up a bit.??

I'm pretty sure you will have to order them that way from Taylormade.  Any authorized dealer will be able to place the order for you.  I just got a set of MP 68's that were 2* upright and standard shaft, which they didn't carry in the store, they had to order from Mizuno, took about 10 days to get.

I knew I would get this response! Anyway, I have been playing golf pretty much my entire life.  I just have not had much time in the last couple of years to really focus on my game.  I now have all the time I need to get my game back on track.  I am only 29 so I would like to get some irons that will work for me for awhile as you mentioned.  The ones that I am currently playing, I didnt choose.  They were a gift from my very thoughtful wife.  They have always felt pretty short for my height.  I am 6'2.

I know these clubs I want are designed for the better player but I really like the feel of the MB clubs, I just wouldn't feel comfortable having them through my entire set.  That is why I would like to move to the MC mid irons and CB for the long irons.  I am a pretty solid ball striker with the irons.  My problem comes from the tee, hince, "in the woods"  I lose strokes because of that most of the time.

If you were me, what would you look into.  The s9's that I currently play feel big and bulky and it really hit me when I started playing the Callaway Jaws Wedges.  I love the way they feel and look.  Now I want irons that are thinner and more compact looking and feeling.

I read your post and felt empathetic as you're dealing with same thoughts and wishes as I've been.    I bolded some of your comments above with the suggestion that you know what you want - now just listen to your heart and ignore the naysayer advice you'll no doubt get here.

My game had gotten down to a 6 index before some serious back problems popped up.   Two surgeries later to deal with growth on my spinal cord and I'm back playing golf again, and I although I'm probably playing at about a 12-13 now I similarly wanted to get some clubs where I truly love the look and feel.   For me those were Mizuno MP62s, and I recently picked up a set.    Yes, they are a little harder to hit consistently well, but really not that much harder than my TaylorMades, and they make up for that in workability.     With the TMs I certainly wasn't as punished as much for slight mishits, but I also had a harder time feeling exactly where I was striking the ball, while with the Mizunos I know right on the face where it was hit.

To me, golf is a sport to enjoy holistically.   I don't derive enjoyment just from my scorecard at the end of the day.    I enjoy it when I look at my bag and see those gorgeous MP62s sitting there.   I enjoy the look of them when I set them at address.   I enjoy that feeling of confidence, knowing that if I swing the club just right it will deliver.    I enjoy that wonderful forged feel when I connect on a shot right on the sweet spot, and I enjoy the feedback they give me when I don't.    I enjoy trying to bend the ball into tight pin, even when I don't pull it off.    I enjoy practicing, spending hours on the range trying to tweak and improve my swing or try different shots.

Overall, I feel that going with my heart and getting the clubs that really help make me enjoy all the aspects of the game and not just the score have furthered my love of the game.    And that has the funny contribution of making me wanting to get even better, to prove to my clubs that I can be as good as they'll let me be, so I practice even more.

Don't get so hung up on that tired argument of a player not being good enough for blades - if you play what makes YOU feel good it will probably make you enjoy the game even more, and THAT will make you the better golfer!

I know people are gonna say with a 17 handicap you don't need that.

There are people who say that Tour players should be using at least game improvement clubs. Get what you want. I switched to my Mizunos when my handicap was in the mid-20s. My distance is far more of an issue than my ability once I have an iron in my hand. I hit my irons plenty high and am far more in love with that feeling of a great iron hit than I am with the idea that I might get more distance from artificially strong lofts on ugly clubs. Roger Dunn and GolfSmith - you're near two of the largest offerings of each - can easily place the order for you, and each set will cost you pro-rated (e.g., if you get 4 from one set, you pay 1/2 = 4/8 of the set cost). It's very easy to walk in and tell the guy in clubs you want to place an order, 3-4 TaylorMade CB/ 5,6,7 MC/ 8.9.pw MB, with this shaft, in this length spec, and that grip, etc. The Crossings at Carlsbad - that should be an easy drive for you - has a fitting day on Saturday (5/21), from 10-2. Go there, try out the various shaft options, see what grip you like, find out how long the shaft should be and if you need the lie adjusted. One word of caution: don't tell the demo guy your handicap. Just say you're ready to buy a mixed set of CB/MC/MB, and want to be fitted. I've had TaylorMade reps argue with me over which club of theirs I should be considering (TM and Cobra have both talked themselves out of sales to me) when they find out my handicap, even after getting compliments on the swings when trying out MBs. Somehow the guys at Nike and Mizuno never have problems with guys like us wanting nicer clubs.

If I was 29 again.. hmmm?   As much as you love the feel of the MB model, those are going to be the least forgiving, especially with the 3,4 and 5 irons.. As I got older in my 30's those were the first to hurt the most..  I looked around and saw they only offer the MB and MC models in a 3-PW set.. grrrr  The CB gives you the 4-AW set, which is my preference because I love using a hybrid instead of a 2 or 3 iron.. Without actually swinging them, and only going by looks and hearsay, I'd pick the CB set..  I might even look into those now for myself.. I originally was looking at the 2.0 before this year..

As for the diver.. ha ha .. You suffer from the same problem I do.. Out of a typical 14 fairways in a round of golf, I hit 6-8 on average.. I always told people if I could hit the fairways 66% of the time, I'd be dangerous.. lol  I have not tested the R11 yet, but I'm wanting to.. I so need something different then my R5.. I hit all my clubs with high trajectory.. My driver has a 8.5 degree loft and I fly it 250-270 all carry, no roll  :( I have yet to find a tree in Ohio I can't take my driver up and over on.. LOL

Anyways.. Good Luck with your choice..  My selection would be CB, MC then MB in that order..

For future reference, you can order just about any set with just the configurations you want (provided that club exists). When I bought my MP-57s, I ordered only irons 4-9, got a FLI HI, and a 47 degree wedge (instead of the 47 degree pitching iron). While the TaylorMade MBs only have 3-P, there are blade sets with gap wedges. Maltby MMBs have a 51 and Adams Pro Black MBs have a 52. I'm sure it's not just these two.

I know I do not want a MB 3 and 4 iron.  Those are the two that give me problems as with a lot of people.  I would keep those CB, move to MC 5,6,7 and MB 8,9,pw.  I don't need a gap wedge as I play Callaway wedges and honestly don't use the gap wedge all that much anymore.  I may look into getting another one as my current wedges are 56,60,64(my course has a lot of elevated greens).  I would probably pick up a 52 Jaws Wedge to go with the rest of my wedges.

I always say go with what feels the best and what makes you feel confident because at the end of the day you will be over the ball swinging the club. If you love how they look and feel that is half the battle because you have the confidence and feel that you can hit a pure shot and as we all know golf is a very mental sport. My only opinion would be to get fitted and go to the golf store with a open mind and give at least 2 other brands a chance. You could end up walking out of there with a set of nike vr pro blades because they honestly felt better. I just always say there are alot of brands out there for a reason, my bag has a mix of everything because certain brands fell better for what i am trying to do on the golf course. Good luck.
