How closed does my club face have to be?

On a good day I either hit the ball strait or a cut. I cant for the life of me hook/ draw the ball. I assume I need a closed club face at impact to hook but I don't care how early I try to release all I can do is hit a cut.

If I remember the percentages correctly, initial path of the ball is mostly determined by face angel, fade/draw on the ball is 86% path not face.

So if you're saying you're trying to hit a draw, you need to look at your swing path, not how open/closed the face is.

To hit a draw the clubface needs to be closed to the target on an in to in plane or an in to out path.  The reason why you are not drawing the ball is because you are not swinging in to in or in to out you are most likely coming across the ball out to in which is why you get your fades.

I respectfully disagree with that. The face needs to be closed relative to the path and what the path is/was before or after impact is irrelevant.

Sean said it too, but you definitely don't want the clubface closed to the TARGET and a path even FARTHER to the right. That ball will start left and hook farther left.

Yup. One of my friends hits a draw off the tee with a wide open face at setup. It's amazing to me, really. My clubface is usually closed relative to my path and it's a fine line between drawing and flat out hooking.
