I am looking to buy some new irons..I am around a 9 or 10 handicap. I have looked at the Callaway Razr X ones and Taylormade 2.0 and the Titelist Ap1 irons..all the same price. Any words of advice on which clubs are better than another. I have hit the Callways and taylormade irons..both felt nice off the club in the simulator that is. Willing to take any advice you have..Thanks!

Take a look at the Mizuno JPX 800s. They're as long as the Burners or the Razrs with less offset and very forgiving. Unless you need the offset, these are the best sticks around in the GI category....at least in my opinion, and I tried all the same ones. A close 2nd are the Cobra S3s. I would put the AP1s at the bottom because they're not as long as the others...just as forgivng though.

When you're looking at distance, take a look at the loft of the irons... Some can be misleading. You'll think "OMG this 7i is going 200!!!" when in reality, it's the same loft as another makers 6i or 5i... and don't ignore STOCK shaft length either... I think overall you'll find that irons are VERY similar. You'll just have to find a set that "feels good" or "looks good at address", which will inspire confidence...

... and the #1 tip:  Get fitted for irons. (shaft length, lie, grip size, etc...)

Make sure you look at this before you think that the AP1's aren't as long as any of the above mentioned. For instance, an AP1 7 iron has a degree more of loft than a JPX 800 and two degrees more loft than a S3.

Ok i will look into that. Thanks alot! honestly I dont think I would be able to tell if its like a one degree difference from the razr x to the 2.0 irons.  I think the PW is the the one that has different degrees ..one is 44 and the other is 43 i thought.. But i will look at the specs and compare...any preference on these two brands? im such an indecisive person haha...reviews help alot..and me hitting them equally well didnt help..I will need to hit them again.

I just looked up the specs..and it was 1 degree either way for both sets..taylormade had some 1 degree more and some 1 degree less..and visa versa with the razr X compared to taylormade

just so you know, that finish on the grooves does start to wear off a bit. it's not noticeable at address (at least so far). shots off the toe don't leave a mark, though (on the darker black area).

It'd also be nice to know a little more about your game... are you a 9 or 10 hcp and still getting better and practicing often or do you just play every other weekend.  What areas of the swing do you have trouble with?  The reason I ask is that at that level you can get a less forgiving club that will allow you to work the ball later on if you are on the path where you are improving... if you just play every once in a while or aren't practicing often then the more forgiving sets would be the better option.

Of the three sets you listed, I personally like the Titleist.  I really like the way that they look... If you feel that you can handle a little more club you could always look at the AP2s as well... I really like those.

I would still like to get better yes..I do not practice as much as I should or would like.  I have more trouble with my 8-W shots actually..much better player with my long irons. I will try and hit the titleist clubs..I have looked at a used set for 420 dollars..what do you think of that price? FYI my name is Tristan too haha..I had the king cobra oversize irons from 1995..they were my dads..then when he stopped playing I took them and used them till now..honestly I want a new set of clubs while improving my game more..possibly a few strokes a round if not more. But I have my days were I do much better and much worse..the consistency needs to be there. I just hope with new clubs n practice I can get back to being consistant..but who is consistant in golf now days haha

Tmurry14,

Since you're a 10 handicap you should take a look at the Mizuno JPX-800 pro irons. They are a forged game improvement iron that has less offset and a thinner top line than most game improvement irons, but best of all,... they just feel wonderful when struck well. I like that most companies are now offering a forged game improvement iron for us avid golfers who dont want a big clunky club but don't have the "game" for a players iron either. The JPX-800 pros still get good distance without jacking up the length and lofts to gain distance like some others do. The Callaway Diablo forged irons are a nice set but the are pretty $$$, and the AP-2 forged irons are nice as well but not quite as forgiving as the JPX-800 pros in my opinion.

Good luck in your search.

I personally would go with the TM Burner 2.0 irons. Not only do they look nicer, they are GI irons that are actually played by some of their touring staff (Kenny Perry and Natalie Gulbis).

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

    • Interesting for sure. I have actually had my instructor try to get me to get the elbow in front as well. That actually spiraled me into the slump I am currently working out of. I would disagree with him saying that lowering the arm might be the simplest and easiest move in golf 😄. I am having SOO much trouble making that move instead of my hands immediately moving toward the ball from the top. It's like my mind has 0 patience at the top and tells me to GO GO GO.
