Hi guy's. Pretty simple question here, I hope.

I play 2-3 times per week and am considering buying a new driver. I have a clubhead speed of 104mph and high launch.

Will I benefit enough from custom fitted shafts to justify the expense, or can something like a Mizuno fasttrack with the stiff stock shaft provide most of what I need.

I suppose as with anything that all depends. Id just go out and hit a bunch of drivers and see what you like see what you dont before you go that route. Get an idea of what is available and what works for you.

Try a few different combinations out if you can... from what you say about your swing and typical trajectory, I'm not sure that the Mizuno would be the best choice (if you are talking about the MP630) as the Fubuki shaft that it comes with is high launching.

The "Tour" model drivers might come with a shaft that will work for you. Tour drivers tend to feature low- to mid-launch shafts. Mainline club manufacturers provide the golf shops with fitting carts, which contain different clubheads and shafts which the clubfitter can mix for different testing combinations.

You might find a driver + shaft "off the shelf" at the shop that will fit your needs. Or, the shop could custom-order you a driver with a particular shaft. Some shafts are considered "stock," while others would have an upgrade charge.

As Lanky and tristan said, you won't know the answer until you go test drivers.

I appreciate this advice guy's. My local club fitter tells me an 8deg i15 with a project x 6.5 shaft is my optimum combination. To me this looks about right if I was able to play regularly. I'm just worried this is too unforgiving a setup for an infrequent player. I've never really looked at club technology before ( I'm a walk up and hit it golfer) and am trying to ensure I get the right club first time rather than second guessing on the first tee.

Any further help/advice would be great.

PG,

You might get a "second opinion." A new driver will cost you way more than a doctor's visit, so get fitted at a second shop and see what they say.

Your question is one which many ask. I played in a scramble a couple of years ago with a former scratch small-college golfer. He had swapped blades for game improvement clubs because he couldn't keep his game at "high level" now that he's married and working full time.

If you have a teaching pro who knows your game, you might ask for advice.

Quick update here.

I picked up a Mizuno MP630 fastrack at a clearance sale last week (at the price couldn't leave it there). So far I'm more than pleased, the ball flight is nice with the weights properly set and while I haven't picked up much distance I am spending a lot more time on the fairway.

Iacas review  put me on to this club originally. Very accurate info. I need to read the reviews here more often.

Dude - that club is money!! I bought that same driver at Play It Again Sports (was in the director of the local country club's spare bag - no evidence this thing had ever been hit) and I haven't had a penalty stroke since putting it in play. It's not as long as my G10 or my X-Tour, but the control is fantastic. For anyone who bemoans the "high launch shaft" they really need to pull their head out of  . . . the brochures and hit one. Like I said, it's not the longest driver, but I haven't hit a bad one yet (I know  - huge jinx right there).
