From address, I have been keeping my back (right) elbow tucked somewhat close to my side and allowing that arm's forearm to rotate as my shoulders rotate the club up to the top.

But then I came across this video of Ben Hogan , where he seems to use a different method. It seems as though he leads back with his right elbow. This action occurs at around 59 seconds in the video.

I tried this technique, and it helps me turn the shoulders farther back to near 90° versus 80°. My left arm is closer to my chest, thus it is easier for me to get into the Early Elbow Plane (EEP). I'm not sure if the EEP and the slot are synonymous.

I'd like to use the correct method. Do others use this action that Hogan shows in the video?

Thank you,

Mark

This is something I've been working on with my instructor.  In reading Hogans Five Lessons Hogan states the elbows should be positioned so the "pockets" formed between the upper and lower arm face upward and the elbows point towards the hips but in looking at his swing videos he doesn't quite do that.  His elbows point outside his hips and the pockets don't face as upward as his book would lead you to think they should.   The takeaway is the same as he describes in his book (maintaining the triangle) but the elbow position he uses in his video allows the arm to fold tighter to the body and be in better position on the downswing.

I've changed my elbow position to be more like his videos and the result has been more swing power, longer distances and less strain on my elbow.
