I'll be traveling for work next week and will be spending a few days in Knoxville, TN.  Does anyone have any good recommendations for public courses in or near to Knoxville, or even good ranges?  All suggestions welcome.  Thanks!

I live in Knoxville so here's the 411 on it..in the order that i consider nice public

  1. Landmark Golf Club at Avalon community…golfnow..great rates and very nice course! Weekday 28 on golfnow 45 regular. http://www.avalongolf.com/
  2. Willow Creek Golf club ..very nice…45 during week I suppose… http://www.willowcreekgolf.com/
  3. Centennial Golf Course.. www. centennial gc.com course good shape…very tight and kinda hilly..golfnow also..27 to 35.
  4. Three ridges Golf Course .. www.knoxcounty.org/ golf / three _ ridges /index.php

Pretty good..course…on the eastside of knox…

Near McGee Tyson Airport golf

Pine Lakes Golf Ok course…29 to 33 ..totally public.. http://www.golflink.com/golf-courses/course.aspx?course=1045356

  1. Egwani Farms Golf…http://egwanifarmsgolf.com/index.shtml….Nice course but Avalon definitely better…for the $.

WEST is BEST in this town..for culture, places to stay and eat.  Anything WEST of Cedar Bluff Exit off i-40…or near airport is ok too….Only course near downtown worth it is Three Ridges Golf above..Turkey Creek Shopping and Hotel Area…anywhere on “Parkside Drive” plenty of hotels and over 80 places to eat in 1.5 miles…

Just let me know if you need want anyone to go play a round after work one evening. I work for ADT Security Services..in Knox..

Cheers!

TNGreg gave you good info.  Some more choices for you.

If you are stuck east of town, River Islands Golf Course, at the 402 Exit, is also a very good choice.  Nice challenging layout, scenic, good price.  If you are down I-75 towards Chattanooga,  Rarity Bay off the 72 Exit is good choice.  Well maintained, nice lake views, also a good choice.

If you do get to play Avalon, a piece of local knowledge - putts break towards the Interstate.

If you just want a driving range, your best choice is the one at Willow Creek.

Another option, especially if you are pressed for time, is the Wee Course at Williams Creek which is located close to downtown.  It is a Par 3 course, but it is one of the better if not best Par 3 courses you will play.  Built a few years ago, Fazio even had a hand in the design.  There is water, a lot of elevation changes, tight greens,  woods, a lot of fun.

I'll give a third recommendation to landmark at avalon.  Just got done with a family trip to Watts Bar Lake, about twenty to the course, and had a nice round there. Didn't shoot well, 87, but that had more to due with my short game than anything.  Interesting tidbit about the highway breaks, didn't notice that.  those holes along the highway are a bit distracting with the traffic.  Not sure if the weather has been dry there or not but the fairways were on the verge of burning out.

Man am I glad you guys mentioned Avalon.  Years ago, a large group of us were on our way to Franklin, TN for a golf trip and played "a course in Knoxville" on the way down and I never could remember the name of it.  It was Avalon!  It's been driving me nuts trying to think of the name.  Very nice course from what I remember.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
