Golfers, I just watched some of the best golf up close that you will ever see. Northest amature, if you are near RI u need togo over to see this golf tournament. You can get up close and personal to these young men see some great golf. Top notch college kids/ high schoolers. Just finished with Pete Uihlein smoking the wet course and shooting a 261, 19 birdies, 1 eagle and 6 bogies.!

I just qualified for a Jr. amatuer golf tournament in Washington DC. They took two people from my qualifying location. the winner shot 69, 72 and I shot my career low 74, then another career low 69. I got second out of 28 people, and i am advancing to washington on july 18th. 154 golfers make this tournament and the top 64 move on to match play which is televised! pretty stoaked for that!!

Is the event sponsored by the AJGA. Junior golf is awesome. We had a AJGA event at the club I work at last year could not beleive the quality of the golf. It was not an invitational but these kids didn't seem to care. If you are hooked on thegame get into as many of these events as possible. Many kids have great skills but are mush whenit comes to the mind game. Good Luck!

Ams rock. And this is their time of year, Summertime is when all the big stuff is, US Am, Publinks, State Ams, City Ams. I've got a couple of friends that are still playing as amateurs. One buddy just got back from the California State Am at Olympic Club in San Fransisco. Unfortunately didn't do too hot. He's got SoCalGoflAssoc's Match Play at Sandpiper coming up. This is his second year. Only 20 years old. This kid is gonna make it! Another one of these young punks used to be a member at my club. He is having a great season on the Golden State Tour's Am division. I think he's about 20 also. Huge! 6'7" I think, and murders the ball!

Yes, I've played both courses though never under USGA conditions. It should make for a good challenge for you guys!

  • 1 year later...

Just wondering if anyone else has been watching the 2012 U.S. Amateur. Personally, I would like to get my HC down to the point where I could play, and even possibly contend in some state am competitions and even try to qualify for the US am tournament. Any comments?

Burner 9.5

X 3&5 Woods

DCI Gold 3- PW(48*) + 52* Vokey wedge

56* sand wedge

If you are more than 22 yrs old and not shooting par golf once a month, better to focus on another life task.  You certainly can improve your game but to think that high level competitive golf is in your future seems a stretch,  considering your stated HC now.  Realistically, folks older than teens cannot improve fast enough to get to highest levels.  Costs, energy levels, learning speeds (think of learning a new language and compare yourself to a 8 year old kid), etc.  You may not meet them but every AM tourney has 100s of guys/gals working for the same dream.  And most (all) of them started years ago hiking up that long, torturous  hill.

Out standing reply Joe! I am privilege to be close to a past winner's family  of the US am and a past #1 ranked amateur golfer in the world. This kid has every possible advantage in the world. He went to the am 4 times before finally winning. He is now  playing in Europe on challenge tour. These two kids who just finished 1&2 this year will probably never be seen again. Look where they came from. They barely made it in. This is the problem with match play someone gets hot and the big dogs fall. No past history of wins just qualifying and winning. I don't mean to take anything from these kids but will they be seen again in golf?

Why would it matter if they are never heard from again?  The US AM doesn't necessarily have to be indicative of future greatness.  It is just like any other tournament, whether it be match play, stroke play, or any sport for that matter.  Whoever is playing best on any given day/week/weekend will win and that is the greatness of tournament play as opposed to league play (IMHO).

Nicely put slover. If the kid has no back pressure from family or his own thoughts you would hope he enjoys the moment and moves on if the golf life  doesn't work out!

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
