Is my shallow swing plane causing the aforementioned troubles?

If i steeping it should i get better "down on the ball" contact and also stop coming from the inside to much and leading with the hosel?

I hit a few shots yesterday that topped, and a few that flew straight right (natural part of my game at the minute :( )

My only problem is swinging more upright feels really odd and as if im going to cause a severe slice, but the results are varied

It's a point I constantly have to monitor in my own swing. If you rotate too much on the backswing, you CAN be too flat, too "behind" with your club, and coming down you'll lead with the the hosel, producing a shank that has some elevation. If you compensate by pulling your arms towards you at impact to save the shots, you'll most likely top it. Try to feel no rotation, left shoulder just going down in your backswing.

Cheers Kurisu

After a bit of reading up ive seen that i need to

1) rotate steeper to get the correct swing plane

2) lead with the hips so keep the shoulders either nuetral or closed at impact to get a better ball contact, at the minute i am rotating my hips and after trying the advice i realised i was opening my shoulders up way to much!! which could account also for the bad contacts as im rising up in my follow through

Ive battled the shanks, unfortunately not too long ago.  My problem was such a dramatic shallow takeaway.

What did I do to fix it?  First I didn't know I had such a dramatic takeaway, friends never told me because I was still a decent golfer and they didnt feel like they should give me advice since I was better than them.  I took a video of a friend one day in order to help him and I asked him to use my camera and get a few clips of me.  First thing I said to my friend was "Why did you never tell me!?"  From there I worked on making a steeper takeaway, however it felt so awkward.  It wast til I made a correction in my spine angle, pointing my sternum at the ball in  a close to parallel line with the shaft of the club that I am now feeling confident and strokin' the ball better than before.
