Went from hitting high irons well and low irons poorly to exactly the oppisite. My four iron is my best shot. What gives?

I used to hit my wedges, 9, 8, and 7 fairly well. Still had topped balls, hooks, and slices, but for the most part I felt I could trust those clubs. 6,5, and 4 irons kicked my ass. I almost would refuse to hit them it was so bad. Could not hit a fairway, much less get any solid contact.

I took a couple of lessons, and I feel like I undestand the mechanics of my swing, grip, and stance better. When I am at the range I play a game with my irons. I hit each club, starting with my wedges until I hit two solid shots in a row. When I hit the two good shots I move down to the a lower iron. If I hit three terrible shot in a row I move back up to a higher iron. Usually I go back and forth for about thirty minutes before I get to my 4 iron, but once I get to my 4 iron (highest iron in bag) it's game over. I hit 80% of my shots superbly. I am completely caught off guard, and I basically have to tire out or take a break to get back down to my wedges and lower irons. When I get back to those clubs, I fall completely apart. I have a feeling that my lower irons havn't gotten worse, they just haven't gotten better. Although, I do feel like they are worse when I start hitting those after my 4 iron. The whole thing just seems bizzare to me. Anyone experience this? Any ideas why I would hit the lower irons better? I always thought they were supposed to harder to hit.

Also, I guess I should state that I purchased new clubs as well before this started. During my first lesson, I talked to the instructor about the irons I was getting and he said they should work better for me that what I was using (fit wise that is).

You should take video of yourself hitting the shorter irons and then longer irons to see if your changing something in address or swing that is causing the problem.  Also you might try altering your practice routine so that once you're warmed up you mix up the order you hit the clubs to force you to work on hitting different length clubs back to back.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
