I started playing golf around two years ago from some old clubs that once belonged to my grandpa.  I guess they were good for starting out, but now I'm in desperate need of new clubs.

I have around $400 max to spend and right now all I'm looking for is a new iron set and a new driver.  I'm not too sure as to how to divide the money between the iron set and the driver.  I would like to have some forgiveness and workability as well.  Right now, I'm looking at Adams Idea Tech A4-R.  Comes with a 4 hybrid and 5-AW for $250 as well as a TaylorMade Burner HT for my driver for $130.

I'm not too sure as to how good the irons are, so any comments would be nice.  I'm open to any brand as long as it fits my price range.

Those Adams irons are a good choice. Not sure about that driver, but there are a bunch of choice around that price.

I would put most of the cash towards the irons.  Reason I say this is because you will likely use them for a much longer time frame.  Drivers are a dime a dozen.  For instance I have bought 3 since Jan.  TM r9, Nickent 4dx and now a Callaway FT-IQ.  Very tough to find a driver that works.  I would even look used for drivers given that reason.  Just so hard to find a head and shaft combo to fit your swing characteristics.

I picked up Taylormade Burner Plus irons back in Jan.

Very forgiving for a mid to upper handicapper.

They could probably be had for about $250-300 right now for a 4 though Gap wedge set.

Also, it looks like your pricing is from Rockbottomgolf.com

Have you considered the Callaway FT-IQ driver they are currently selling for $119.  If you can get past the square head, this thing is a laser down the middle.

Granted I only have one round on it.  But its the first time I have ever hit the fairway all but once time when using a driver in a round.

Most forgiving driver I have ever hit.  Freakishly straight.  I did lose about 5-10 yards over the Nickent but I will take straight over being under the trees anyday.

Some other irons I tested back in Jan.

Cobra S2 max.  Same price as the Burner plus's but on the monitor I was generating more ball speed with the burners so I opted for them.

Ping G10's - Looking back I regret not buying these.  Ping, well lets just say are Pings, they hold their value, they are built top notch and you can get them custom ordered in your specs.  Granted about $100 more but it would have been worth it.

At least I am happy with the Burner Plus's.  Can't recall how many off center shots I've hit with them and how they correct it and make it playable.

Also its fun to be able to hit a 4i for once.  So easy I am thinking about ordering a 3i online to match the set.

Driver: Ping G25

3w - Ping K15

3h - TEE Trilogy

4h - TEE Trilogy

5h - TEE Trilogy

Irons: Ping G25 6-LW

Putter: Odyssey White Ice D.A.R.T
Bag: Nike SQ Tour

Optics: Bushnell Tour V2 Slope

Shoes: True Linkswear

True that.. I buy almost all of my clubs and accessories used and they all function like new.. You just have to make sure what you're buying is in good shape.. Check out the used rack at a local Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy.. Sometimes you can find a good deal there too if you look around enough.

I really can't spend more than $400 so the Ping G10's are gonna have to be a no, unfortunately.  However, the Burners do seem like they would be nice, but I'm not able to find them as cheap as you said.  I searched on Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, and GolfSmith.  As for the Callaway driver, I really don't mind the shape at all and found a good deal on E-bay for around $100.  However, I don't think my local Dick's has this specific one to try out.

The closest golf store is around an 1.5 hours away.  Other than that, I'd have to go to Dick's, but seem to have much more limited choices.

The Ping G10 is a little bit out of my price range.  The Burners look nice and I wish I could give them a try.  The closest Golf Galaxy/Golfsmith is around 90 minutes away, I'm not going to have the time to drive that far to try out some clubs.  The only place I could go to is a Dick's Sporting Goods, but they are rather limited when compared to the other two stores.  Looking on Ebay for a little bit, I could get some good deals on the Callaway FT-IQ driver that you mentioned, so I might just have to try to get it.  Is it a bad idea to buy clubs without trying them out first?

Look on the bay for Wilson Staff Di11's. More forgiveable then ping g15's and look very nice, not much offset. I m LOVING mine. quite  few on here that like them as well. Google Wilson di11 tester thread on hackers paradise.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
    • Day 56 (4 May 26) - Worked on some ball-then-ground drills - going from P3 thru impact - with a slowed tempo, working to keep all parts in sync.
