How many wraps to makea midsize grip

I just did a re-grip with standard grips, adding wraps to make a midsize.

Most experts said 3 wraps. I did three wraps then measured that grip with wraps vs an actual midsize.

The results:

Standard grip with 3 wraps = 21.64mm (measured with digital cailipers middle of the grip)

Midsize= 22.23mm (measured with digital cailipers middle of the grip)

Total difference= .59mm

I'd say it is 4 or 5 wraps to make it exactly like a midsize.

Depends on thickness of tape. 3M economy tape is 4.5 mm and heavy duty is 5.5 mm.

Makes it all the more incredible that Bubba Watson has 10 and 12 extra wraps of tape (to give the proper taper he desires) on his grips!

This cannot be correct... in any dimension?!

It takes 4 wraps of tape to make a midsize on most standard grips.  I play a midsize with 2 or 3 wraps (depending on butt diameter), and have used a standard with 6 in a pinch.

Cheap tape is not as thick as Heavy Duty tape. It does make a difference according To Maltby Club Fitting School I went to last fall.

My basic 3M blue painters tape is roughly .005" thick, or .127mm, so maybe he meant .45mm (.018") and .55mm (.022")?

I think he meant mil instead of mm (millimeters).  One mil = .001 inch, so 4.5 mil = .0045 inch which is close enough.

Some company's consider 1/32 (.0312") over to be midsize, and others 1/16 (.0625"), so it depends.  I like a midsize with less taper so i end up putting 6 wraps under the lower half and 3 wraps under the top half of a regular Golf Pride grip with a .600" core.  A grip with a .580" core will give you another calculation to throw in.

You are correct.. Being an American from the South, I am confused if it ain't inches or feet. The only metric I am concerned about is adding 10% to meters to get yardage in yards!!!!
