Help Wanted: Need a new set of Irons, Decent Price. What to get?

Hey guys, I've been going through a very frustrating slump with my golf game for about the past 3 weeks so i have finally decided to take the leap and join the site.

I've been golfing off and on for the last 14 years or so. I am currently using the same clubs that I originally got back in 1997. They aren't a name brand of any sort, though I did get them at a reputable golf shop. They just say "MDD Plus" and "Progressive Offset" on the Irons.

I played pretty regularly from 1997-2002, including one year on the golf team (i wasn't good enough to make Varsity, just went out so I could play everyday). Once I started college in 2002, I got away from it a bit, but I have been playing pretty regularily again for about the last 3 or 4 years.

Anyway, I think my Irons have finally bitten the dust. For some reason about 3 weeks ago, I started this slump where I am literally unable to get any distance out of my Irons (Not having this problem with the Woods). I will hit the ball flush, but it will not go far whatsoever. None of my friends who are avid golfers can figure out the problem either, my swing looks good and I am making good contact most of the time. I've come to the conclusion that part of my problem could be these clubs have just gotten way too much use the last 14 years and I've warn too far down on the Club Face.

Anyway, even if that isn't problem, I think it's probably time I get a new set of clubs anyways. Can anyone make some good recommendations? I am currently planning a wedding, so I can't afford anything very extravagant. Used might be the way to go unless I can get a really good deal. I saw someone recommending the Callaway X20s in another thread.

A little about my game. I usually shoot around 100 on 18 holes. Like I said, I'm a pretty average golfer. I flirt with a slice here and there, and I have a definite tendency to hit the ball too high instead of keeping it down.

I bought a set of TaylorMade Burner Plus cavity backs last year - fantastic clubs.      They're going for dirt cheap now, being that they'r a couple years old ... you'll love them.

ive been shopping for a new set of irons myself recently and so far im really loving the mizuno stuff, maybe try finding a set of mx-23's or mx-200's, they can be found cheap online

Most importantly what is your budget? Are you looking for 3-pw, 4-pw, 5-pw? Do you need a gap wedge or sandwedge included? Do you need stiff or regular flex shafts?  Do you want new or will you go with used?

Check out a reputable online dealer like globalgolf.com and go pre-owned. Any cavity back from a name brand company is going to be sufficient, the specific brand and iron set is just preference. Probably your best bet is going to a golf store and hitting different clubs to see what you like best, then going online and picking them up.

I'm looking to stay under 200-250.

Either 3-PW or 4-PW. I don't need a sandwedge.

As far as stiff or regular flex, I don't know enough about them to say.

I'd love new, but I am open to used as long as they aren't way worn down.

I checked out the Callaway X20s at a Golf Shop the other day and really liked them. They were 399.99 though, more than I want to spend :(

Others might hate me for saying this, but, gigagolf has some x-20 clones that are less than $200 shipped....others on here have said they are great clubs. You can order them to your desired specs.

Did you have a look at the new Wilson staff clubs?

They are great for feel, and less money than the big names,

i think for quality they can compete.

Personaly i need new irons 2, think of going to the FG tour irons,

seeing your hdc the are to much a blade for your game, but

maybe the DI11 are good for you!

I was in a very similar position to you just a few years ago.  I actually picked up a new set of Nike Slingshot 4S (4-AW) for about $212 delivered to my front door from Dick's Sporting Goods.  I still see these from time to time, though they are a few years old now (they were already 2 years old when I bought them).  Having a new set gives you the comfort and confidence to get out there while you work to see what other clubs you need to build the set that works for you (for example, I have since scrapped the Sand and Gap wedges for Vokeys (which are my favorite clubs)).  Nike often isn't the purist choice, by they know how to cater to the masses...which in golf means the 20 handicappers like us.

2nd the Wilson Staff clubs. I just picked up a brand new set of Di11's, 4-GW on ebay for 209 shipped. They are awesome.

I would say look and hit as many as you can.  Hit quite a few different sets looking for mine.  Found a set of 4-pw Adams A4 irons that felt and hit very nice.  Got them used in good shape for 160.  Spent some extra dough to get them fitted too.
