I think the Nike MachSpeed irons are fantastic for a first set. They're very forgiving and look sleek. Get fit for them - Nike does free fittings. Figure out what you want your longest iron to be, and order that through whichever wedge you want to stop with (I suggest stopping on A-wedge in this general case). Grab a MachSpeed hybrid or two if you can grab that too and if you don't already have a hybrid you like. 8 MachSpeed irons will run you about $400 at most golf shops nowadays. 7 will run you $350 if you go 5-A, and the hybrids are in the $100 area. I think the MachSpeeds are a better set than the ignites and slingshots, for what it's worth.

Also check out the new ignite irons, they do not have hybrids in them but they are a nice shape and very forgiving

My cousin plays ignites and they seem to have helped his game.  I have seen scratch - high handicaps playing slingshots, and I liked the 4Ds I demoed.  I play the vr pro combos now and think they are suitable for a fairly wide range of players.  Look for used on ebay and globalgolf.  I have bought and sold a lot lately and it has helped me get what I have for next to nothing. Buying new clubs is kind of like buying a new car, great value can be found in used.  Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys...any other info on the machspeeds??After looking at those on line they seem to be nice. And the 2011 ones wool be out in August. So I should be able to get 2010 fairly cheap.

^ Excellent advice. I have hit a lot of Nike golf clubs and liked the majority of them. However, if I were you, I would also look at some other options. Perhaps some Adams, Cleveland or TaylorMades irons? There are a ton of great, high quality irons out there, so definitely hit as many as you can before you pull the trigger.

I've had Nike Ignite irons over two years, and love them. But do try others because I tried some Taylormade Burner irons this weekend at Golfsmith and think I will upgrade mine soon. They are great and very forgiving but they were a present so I didn't personally pick them out.

    • Day 159 1-19 Flow drill while attempting to add arch in wrist on downswing. Not where it needs to be but felt good working on swing flow.
    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.

    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
