On Saturday Sergio missed his par putt on, I think the 15th and after he finished the hole he spit in the cup. The camera caught this (before they quickly switched off of him).

OHhhhhh... I see. Duhhh!

I'm a Sergio fan, my son and I spent about an hour talking to him and he was pretty cool, down to earth, but that's pretty crappy of him to do. They actually should tell him something about that or fine him. After all, it's a damn gentlemans game. Unfortunately I'm for most of the complaints. Phil

Sergio will have to settle for being a rich guy athlete who gets laid a lot. He is no great golfing talent and I stick to my earlier suggestion that he will never win a major.

He has flashes of brilliance, a shot here and there, but all we hear about, or will hear about, is his "potential". He has an uneven temperament that limits his golfing performance and this spitting incident makes him look bad on a personal level. How long before his major sponsors drop him?

LOL - No way Taylor Made/Adidas drop him because of this.

I actually agree with you... he has a ton of talent but will not win a major unless his short game improves. He's a great ballstriker and will consistantly get into contention but his putting continues to let him down. He just doesn't have what it takes right now. The PGA will probably either fine him or give him a slap on the wrist. Neither matters. You can fine him a whole bundle of cash and it won't matter. If they really wanted to get him, they'd suspend him for an event or two. That would hurt, especially with the Masters looming. But that won't happen (nor do I think it should).

I saw this, too. I thought I was imagining it but it was white and it came out as he was picking his ball. I kind of brushed it off like I was seeing things, but now it seems more people picked up on it...I hope it was by accident, because that is just plain nasty if it was intentional.

The funny thing is that in the post match interview he said something to the effect of "it just came out." He didn't deny but he did it try to pretty up the pig that was his action.

Listen to who's opinions we're reading about. Wannabes that will never make it to his level of golf or income. But, we're quick to point the finger for a stupid move he made.

Let he that that is "stupid move free" cast the first stone!

Plus, if we were to do something stupid like he did, who would give a shit?

Wait a minute...what does his level of golf and income have to do with "accidentally" or "intentionally" spitting in or near the golf cup. You don't have to be a pro or a billionaire to know that "if" he did that intentionally that it was a crass move. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but don't make it sound that if he is a pro and/or rich that a guy of the street can't comment on something that has nothing to do with his golf ability or fat wallet. It's just a matter of common sense and a lot of people who are a 36 handicap and sweep floors could see that whatever the motivation that it was inappropriate.

And...I don't give a flying f>>>, it doesn't affect my life but it is a forum full of opinions...

Thanks for the sermon Jesus..

C'mon...he is supposed to be a pro...golf is his job. It's almost like some guy who works in an office...get's mad and spits on the coffee pot.

How about...

*People who spit their sunflower seeds on the green
*People who put their cigarettes out on the green or leave butts on the fringe
*People who get a drink from the water cooler and throw the cup under it on the ground
*People not repairing thier fairway divots or ball marks on the green
*People leaving all thier trash in thier carts when they are done playing

Either way there are hundreds of things that could make this list and what Sergio did is truly unaccpetable for a pro athlete to do but it happened so we need to move on and hope that the PGA takes action. I'm sure there are hundreds of fines each year that the public never hears about because they are not shared

I didnt see it, but i heard the tournament host comment on it near the end of the days rounds. He didnt seem to concerned about it, but obviously these kind of things affect the tournament negatively. In the sense.. we're talking about the spitting incident and not how well the tournament was broadcast and how great the course played and looked.

I dont have a problem with spitting on the golf course although its gross. The bulk of players do it including Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods who are 2 classy players. The camera doesnt always pick it up but one time there was a close up on Tiger's face in a tourny. I guess he didnt see the camera and he hocked a fat loogy. It doesnt look very good on the course but its a part of all sports. I exert myself on the golf course, which builds saliva so i spit.

Steve Nash.. a pro basketball player used to lick his fingers before every free throw shot.

Stuff like this is going to happen when emotions run high, and we all know Sergio is an emotional player. However it doesnt excuse that type of behaviour, and personally it makes me sick that he would spit in the cup. If i was a player behind him i would let him know, that it wasnt cool with me at all.

Guys - As I said before, you put a camera on me or probably anyone in here nonstop for 18 holes you are bound so see something. Maybe not spitting in the cup (that is gross) but we all have done things we shouldn't have on the golf course. It is an emotional sport. However, it is Sergio's job, the fact is he is on TV, and he gets paid millions of dollars to represent the sport so yes, the standard should be higher for him.

If t's true that "I don't give a flying f>>>," why get so defensive?

Oh, it's your opinion... U know what they say about opinions. By the way, this buddy of yours, that you're obviously defending is he really "a guy of the street", because I don't know many street people that have the previlage to play golf? Why don't you count your blessings and stop being a hater?

No hater here...I just don't get your reasons (1. We wannabes can't play golf at his level / 2. We wannabes don't have his income. ) for people not commenting on it. We comment on it and move on.

I play more golf at a muni then at a country club and it is accessible to a lot more "wannabes" than so called privileged people. I count my blessings every day...Your insinutation that I'm an A..hole is fine...I can be at times. Just don't go onto a golf forum and not expect people to comment.

Euro Trash, like the lot of them...that's quite a generalisation isn't it ?

Right on....I totally agree Rock. One of the problems I have with this unfortunate situation is that it somehow turned into a Europe bashing contest and lost sight of the issue. Who cares about Sergio spitting in the cup!!! I remember watching David Duvall wandering around the course with a big ol chew in. Nothing against chewing I have been trying to kick the habit for years. The point is where did David spit? On the course probably. You know I think the real nasty habit is spitting sunflower seeds all over the greens.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
