Looking for suggestions regarding my grip. I have been fighting a nasty slice since I took lessons . I started off by using the baseball grip for every club, after my lessons I switched to an interlocking grip. Ever since then my driver has been nothing but horrible slices but my irons improved drastically. I usually go to the driving range everyday to hit a bucket to try to work on my driver slice and decided today to go back to my baseball grip. I hit the ball straight and very long with my baseball grip but kept my interlock for irons. Now here is my problem...

The golf pro who gave me lessons stated that I should use one grip for all my swings as it will make everything more consistent. Does anyone here disagree and think I can use a baseball grip for my driver and fairway woods but keep my interlock for irons? If I do choose to keep the baseball grip will this hinder my ability to progress in golf?

Input is greatly appreciated! :)

I would agree with the pro. You should use the same grip with every club. You would be amazed at what even a slight grip change can do. Adjustments in your grip can affect club path, face position, timing, etc. It's best to get a proper, consistent grip for all clubs and work on your issues from there, in my opinion.

I'd say you should use the same grip... if the baseball grip works best for you then use that one.

In an ideal world you would use the same grip for everything. BUT, that's not the way golf works some times. Many instructors advocate that you use a standard grip for most of your shots but will then say it's ok to use a different grip for specialty shots. For example,  on bunker shots some will suggest that you should weaken your right hand significantly in order to help keep the club face open. Hank Haney had a bad case of the driver yips and solved it by changing his grip with the driver putting the club more in his palm.

Ultimately it is YOUR game. If you can score better by treating your driver swing as a "specialty shot" that requires a different grip then why not? Most players will tell you that their driver swing is different than an iron swing - different setup, ball placement, trying to hit up on the ball or sweep the ball, etc... - so I'm not sure that changing your grip for the shot is that big of deal.

I let my body dictate which swing works for me - first, tried the interlocking grip - had alot of finger pain.    Second, tried the traditional pinky overlap grip - had huge amounts of finger pain in my middle finger of right hand - got to the point where it was bothering me at work.    Then went to the baseball bat grip & it solved the problem.     Very little right hand finger pain - just works for me.

Use the same grip with every club and Id suggest using the overlap grip.  I used to use the interlock and had problems with being inconsistent.  I took some lessons and the pro suggested that I switch to the overlap.  I havent looked back since and am hitting much more solid, consistent shots.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
