Well been trying many different sets of sticks since I got back into the game.  I have come to the conclusion that it is absolutely the individual more than it is any equipment.  Case in  point there is a kid playing along with me for a couple of holes this pm.  He is using what appears to be a cheap K Mart Knight golf set.  This kid is probably 15.  He hits the ball full on with just about every shot and he murders it too.  Me, I'm playing with the set of Howson's I picked up last week and I SUCK!  So there ya go.  This kids driving was poor but when he used his irons he would just powder the ball with a tiny bit of draw.  7 iron about 170 out and drills it pin high.

So what this means is I will not buy another club till I can pick a set, stay with them and get half was decent with them. End of story and thanks for listening.

PS  the kid used a baseball grip cause he plays hockey

Yes and no. A mid-HDCP golfer wants clubs that won't hurt his game. If you have 98 mph swing speed with your driver, you don't want Rflex Ping G10 irons which will deliver you a lot of high hooks (supercavity lift + too whippy shafts).

Similarly, if you have a 75 MPH driver swing speed, you won't play well with Callaway X Prototype forged irons with a PX 7.0 flex shaft.

If you're unusually short or tall, you might benefit from shorter or longer shafts and/or lie adjustments so you catch the ball squarely. And, make sure you have shafts which match your swing.

But once you have proper clubs, there's a learning curve to really use them effectively. And, you won't use them really well until you correct any major swing flaws you have.

Can you buy a good game? Not really.... But you can buy clubs that won't work against you.
