I am looking to add new shafts to my x-20's 5-9 irons. I am looking to order 1/2 inch longer. How long is a standard 7 iron, 37 inches?  When ordering a new shaft if lets say for my 7 iron to start with I order True Temper Dynalite XP would I order 37.5 inches? I am not sure how this works once the shaft is connected to the head and a grip is added.

Also what would a good shaft for the x-20's in a stiff flex?

A little bit of a back story. I have been golfing for 1 year now. I have taken 9 lesson so far and my best score to date was a 72 and am a constant 78-81. These scores are on an executive 18 so there are plenty of par 3's with 6 par 4's. By no means am I a good golfer but can par a few. I started with the x-20's than took like 3 lessons and thought it was okay to jump up to more of a player irons. I bought Macgregor VIP's with KBS stiff tour shafts in regular length. I was fitted and 1/2 longer and 2 degrees upright are my specs. The Vip's are 2 degrees upright. I think I should be playing the x-20's due to my skill level and shelf the VIP's for a bit. So hence the above questions about shafts and lengths. I feel as if the KBS shafts are a bit on the heavy side. I am 6'2 around 185lbs with an athletic build. Any suggestions for shaft brand would be welcomed. I am looking for a nice mid/high trajectory. I currently hit my 7 iron 150 on average 155 on a real solid swing,

I'm not sure if you're planning on doing this yourself of going to a golf shop.  If you're going to a golf shop they will know what to order, but you may find it will be cheaper to order a new set than replace the shafts of your current.  I considered having my irons reshafted, and it was about $65 per club which included the cost of shaft, grip, and labor.  Labor is dependent on how the head attaches to the shaft, some are easier to replace than others.

Another option is to keep your current shafts and have the grips replaced.  They can add a 1/2" when they do it at a much lower cost.
