I no this was probably done a million times. Im still only new to golf after takin it up in may this year. Im going to set myself a goal to score par by this time next year. That does not mean im going to become a scratch golfer just to have one single par round. Just wondering is this possible currently scoring in mid 90's and all advice welcome i will be posting regular updates of my progress.

could be possible, my cousin started playing golf the past few years, he's close to a single handicap. It depends on the person really. Just work at it and see how it goes

If you play by the rules, your chances are Slim and none and Slim just wandered off into the woods. Very few people in the world have the talent to do the above so quickly. I do like your enthusiasm!!  The quickest person in the world that I know of to become a scratch golfer was Greg Norman....and it took him 2yrs.    So theoretically...........he might have shot par in 1 year, but probably not.  He was probably in the tail end of his 2nd year when he was getting close to scratch when he did it for the first time.

PS...I used to think like you when I was new to the game!!  It took me about 4yrs to get in the single digits, and I had this theory.......if I played nearly every day, can I get to scratch?   I proved that theory wrong....in fact, I got worse!!!  LOL......I played 180 rounds that year.  Keep in mind, I am an Ohio guy........where it's not easy to play that much and keep a job/house/marriage intact!!

If you break 80 in your 2nd year of playing, you'll be doing better than 95% of people by that point in time.  If you succeed, I'll tip my hat to you. Where you play also makes a difference........ IMO....anything less than 6,000yds isn't a real golf course.

i wouldn't agree to that on the yardage, what if its a 5700 yard course that has a slope of 150. You never know, could be just a tough course overall.

Its possible but not probable.  Instead of worrying about shooting a certain score by a certain time, why not just have fun playing the game?

If you play by the rules on a decent course it will be very hard to do. It took me 15+ years to hit even par (just last year). I played a bunch when I was younger, but the past 4-5 years I've only played maybe 10 times a year so I could have maybe done it earlier had I played more. I've had several even par 9's and a few 18's at 1 or 2 over, but one round last year was the first time I shot an even par 72, and I haven't done it again. One thing I found out was the score itself isn't the hard part, it is the pressure of doing it, knowing that is goal and you had never done it before. Start smaller. Go for groups of 4 or 5. Make the first goal next year to break 90 2-3 times. Then 85, then 80, then 75. Start with obtainable goals and the confidence will go up and the pressure cooker on the last few holes will start to come down. Not saying you have to average those scores, but when you have something good going make an obtainable goal and try and get to it. If you just go out with the goal of scoring even par, when you don't hit that goal, the game will become frustrating and you won't improve at all. You will be 5 over after 10 and know you can't get to even, so mentally you will check out the last few holes. That is why I say make different goalsto hit through the year. 5 over isn't bad, keep it up and you can break 80, get lucky and you might hit 75. You have to find a way to keep yourself interested when you can't get to even.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

It's definitely possible man. My little brother just started golfing religiously this year, (normally only went out like 2-3 times a summer) and he has improved his handicap by 20 strokes. He started a 30 handicap, now he is shooting around 80-82 on average. If I could golf 5 times a week like him I could have improve that much too. It's also just about your natural ability to improve. Golf is still an athletic game and if you are a natural athlete, you will most likely improve faster than someone who isn't as athletic. If you find that you are good at most other sports, you will probably be decent at golf. That's the way it was in my case, anyways. I'm not amazing, but I shoot alright and I really just started golfing a lot this year as well.

lets set the record straight......

There is a HUUUUGE difference between shooting low 80's-70's and EVEN PAR.....................

HUUUUGE difference.........

Cracking that "even par" nut isn't as easy as you think if you play by the rules.....

Agreed. High 70's Low 80's feels like a million extra shots compared to hitting par.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
