Only way to get better over winter is to.... play over winter in some place where its not very wintery.

Seriously you can do a lot of stuff to help yourself out, hit the gym, go to an indoor range ect. ect. ect. but youll still be worse on the other side of winter unless you can play.

Do what you will over winter but your not going to do any better come spring, just better then you would have had you not worked over winter.

I don't agree with that at all.  That's like suggesting every athlete gets worse in their offseason.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  Offseasons can be very beneficial for a number of reasons, even without true playing or competition.

I agree that once spring arrives, short game touch must be re-learned and as a result, Spring scores are inflated. But I do think much can be gained in the off season that can make real improvement possible. It is the perfect time to work on swing changes, in part because you can be less concerned about where the ball is going. I find that the years when I had a trip planned, I needed to be ready to play. The years without a trip, I can work on things all winter knowing that the changes need not be ready for the course for months.

As has been said here, beating balls in a dome will not make you better. Practice with a purpose can. Many good ideas in this thread. Pick drills that help and work on them instead of beating full swing balls. Maybe take a lesson from your pro and work on the changes for months. The pressure of having your swing ready enough to play each week is gone. Hard changes can be made and new positions and feelings can be trained.

I have very high hopes for a few big improvements this winter (I am going to learn to really trap the ball consistently.) I am not willing to mess with things now because I'm playing golf every week. I don't even want to see my swing on video now because I'm playing well and do not want to see things that I should change. If you really do want make a dramatic change in your game, winter work can be a blessing. Winter is a blessing I will try to embrace even as I suffer through February in Chicago.

wow.  lots of good responses.  in summary, i think i will do the suggested stat tracking for 10 rounds to see where things really are.  i know i score the best when i get up and down the most, but i could be leaving lots of strokes in other places.  it is tedious, but for 10 rounds, i can suck it up.  i do plan on playing some winter rounds with a coat and jeans.  it might not be the most fun golf, but it will keep me in tune.

    • On the subject of teenagers in professional tournaments there is a kid (Kris Kim) who is a member of my club in England and is at my old school. He’s 16. He’s playing in the pga tour event in Texas this week. Shot 69 yesterday for T31 and is -2 today through 5 holes. T55 and on the cut line. I really hope he makes the cut. Will be awesome.    His dad I believe is a teaching pro and his mum was on the LPGA Tour for a while.
    • I have two contenders here that stick out to me: In second place, a putt to win the hole playing the 16th hole at Burnham and Berrow. Playing foursomes and the green has a big bank at the front then a flat bit and then it goes up again to a back shelf. My partner had hit our second shot onto the back shelf. We were 2up at the time and he was being a little wobbly so we didn’t want to lose the hole. Our oppo were conceded a 4 and my partner told me to just lag it down there nicely. 20 year old me meant to do that and failed. I hit it a bit hard and it was definitely going to clear the tier and probably run off the front of the green, but it hit the hole right in the middle and went in. My partner was very happy we won the hole but quite upset at my ability to follow instructions.    Number 2 is my most memorable. I was about 16 playing in the junior knockout at my club. We get to the 10th hole - long par 4 and index 2. I didn’t hit a very good drive, hit my second up about 60 yards short and pitched on to maybe 25 feet. I started walking and I got this feeling. I knew I was going to hole it. There was no doubt at all. I’ve never felt like that any other time in my life but this one putt was a certainty. It was February and the greens had been recently hollow tined so they were in awful shape. I didn’t even line it up. I hit my putt and it bumped and bounced all over the place until it went in the middle of the hole. If I could bottle up that feeling and sell it I’d be up there with Bezos and musk. Mind blowing!
    • It's strange how ONE person can be THAT much different/better/whatever than anyone else.
    • I saw a YouTube review on a bunch of ball brands and the Maxfli Tour X did very well in comparison. I bought a sleeve and found them to be excellent in feel and distance. But I’m a lousy golfer so nobody probably cares about my opinion. 😃
