hey, I've been playing golf for a few years, but I never could afford lessons so ball striking has never really been a real strength for me. I haven't been able to hit balls for a month or so before videotaping this so I notice the obvious flaws like the closed stance and sliding hips. But, I was wondering if you guys could give me a critique or two. My golf swing has come mostly from watching the pga tour and occasional tips from my father so I don't know if my swing is very good fundamentally. So ya, tips would be welcomed, thank you.

Usually they do that for you. I didn't add my name and it magically appeared. :)

Nice swing by the way; much better than mine. :)

I am just an amateur and I am sure you will get some better advice from others, but overall I think you are way ahead than most people with your experience. You are blessed with a very good natural swing that only has to be fine tuned IMHO. You shoulder turn looks great. I wished I had that kind of flexibility. The only thing that I might say is that you look a little tense at your initial setup. You might try relaxing just a bit more, and you just may get even more club speed out of that nice swing. Have fun!

Wow, really nice self taught swing. Agree, you have good instincts, flexibility, and body type for golf. You clearly hit the ball first, then the ground--which is what the best players accomplish. You get your hips nicely well forward at impact with your hands ahead of the clubhead. I am envious of your impact position. Set up--turn both feet out about 15 degrees--this will help with backswing hip turn and hips forward into impact. At address, the ball is a bit too far away from your body--this results in your arms disconnecting from your body at the beginning of the swing. Backswing--Difficult for me to see much--low light conditions (having trouble pausing recorded swings to see positions) You do lift up with your arms at the top of the backswing--make some swings keeping a glove under your rear (right) armpit. Lifting up at the top of the backswing doesn't add much power, but does create an additional move that needs to be adjusted and timed for on the downswing. Forward swing---Nice hip bump forward to initiate the downswing. Love, love, love how you get your right elbow into your right hip going into impact--awesome. Try pushing off more with your right instep (instead of toes), this will get your right leg straighter at impact, thus you won't have to thrust your head back and down as much at P6.

I see what you mean about the set up and backswing. Your tip about the forward swing is interesting, I've never thought of pushing off of my instep before, I'll definitely try that out next time i get out to the driving range. Thank you very much for the tips.

Truthfully, I wouldn't worry too much about your swing.  Yeah, you could square up your back foot (I disagree about opening it) as it's turned toward the target now.  And you could allow your arms to hang down from your shoulders more, it would allow you to be a little more relaxed than the rigidity you have now.

But you hit the ball good. Unless there is a specific fault you are trying to fix, I wouldn't sweat it too much.  Go work on your short game!..

ah i see, thank you. I believe may I misunderstood you uttexas, are you saying I should point my toes outward 15 degrees?

Yes, flaring both feet outwards about 15 degrees will help you make a better turn in the backswing and a better hip push forward in the downswing. In the video I embedded (click on the "watch on youtube"), see how Grant Waite's feet are flared out at address. Here's a video of Luke Donald--he flares his feet out also. Also notice his push off from the rear instep.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
