Hey Guys - first post here! I was looking for some insight into this. I had back surgery 8 years ago ( ruptured disk) and the doctor told me I could continue lifting just cut out the free weights part to it. Well I was seeing if anyone had a workout routine that they have in place that is not to tough on the back and is golf specific. I have been researching this for months now and really can't find a routine that I just love. So any insight to this would be much appreciated.

For someone with back trouble lifting weights alone, free or machine, isn't really getting the job done.  If the main athletic endeavor you still pursue is golf, I'd advocate quitting the lifting all together.  I lifted a ton as a college baseball player, but have moved on to only body weight stuff over the last 8-9 years and have never felt better.

Core strength, flexibility and minor stabilization muscles are at a premium for those with back issues, and weight lifting trains 0 of those.  Luckily those are at a premium for golf as well.  Some kind of routine that involves some yoga and/or pilates style stuff would be a good idea.  Maybe take a look at P90X?  If you have a temperamental back some of those workouts might not be for for you, but I've found those workouts great and they have decent flexibility work and tons of core work.  You can take the workouts that come with it and tailor them to your own schedule and back limitations.

For me it has been yoga, daily use of an exercise ball and walking that has been most helpful in keeping my back and overall body in shape.
