Ok, so I got out to the range today for the first time in about 3 months I believe, and after 50-70 balls i finally got all the shanks out of my system, but by that time each and every swing I would have a sharp tiny pain in my left ankle at the end of the follow through. At times it even became difficult to shift my weight completely because of the pain I knew I had coming. Anyways, last year I was trying to flare out my toes more than I naturally did because both my instructor and golf coach told me to do so. I believe I've heard that Tiger's knee problems were somewhat a result of this twisting caused in the golf swing, and I definitely don't want anything like that happening to me. I tried flaring my toes out even more but there was still definitely a pain. So, my question is, is this just a one time happening due to such a large interval of time not swinging, or is it something more serious that I should get checked out if the pain continues?

Thanks as always!

If that was your first time hitting balls in 3 months & you were able to get thru 50-70 before the ankle started hurting, I'd say you probably tweaked something from the inactivity. Next time just hit half wedges; avoid the urge to go full bore. Easy does it.

you got something going wrong if you tweaked your ankle hitting golf balls. The swing shouldn't be that forceful on the ankles.

Ice it, keep it elevated, maybe wrap it. Stay off it till you feel no more pain.
