Hey all, the wife and I are headed south to NashVegas for the week between xmas and new years and I wanted to play a couple of rounds while I'm down there. Looks like the weather is going to be nice and I was thinking about one of the city courses. We'll be staying at the Preston near the airport and the closest one looks like Shelby... is this a decent place? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

You need to check out Hermitage Golf Club and Gaylord Springs. At Hermitage, they have 36 holes. The President's Reserve course is a resort style course. Very well maintained!  The General's Retreat course used to host an LPGA event.

Gaylord Springs is a links inspired course. They hosted a Champions Tour event for about 10 years. It's a fun course to play.

The entire area went through severe flood damage in May 2010 but they all recovered very quickly and were still great to play.

Sorry I don't know anything about the city courses. I played all of my rounds in the surrounding areas

Driver:  R9 Supertri 10.5* -  909D3 9.5*

2 Hybrid:  2009 TP Rescue 17*

Irons:  R9 TP 3-PW

Wedges:  Vokey 54* & 60*

Putter:  2Ball Vline 34"

Shelby is OK, it just depends on what you want.  It is short but hilly.  Harpeth Hills is the best city course in town.  I agree that Hermitage is the nicest daily fee course, but I have never been a fan of Gaylord Springs. You could try County Hills, it is a good bargain.

Stay away from Shelby! Not only does the course suck, but back in the day when I played out there, you took a chance of getting mugged on certain holes. I even found used syringes on a certain hole where all the addicts would congregate. I am not kididng! This course is not located in a very friendly area (if you know what I mean). I am not sure what your budget is, but like other posters said, Gaylord Springs is a very nice course (a little pricey) as well as the Hermitage. Two Rivers is close to the airport, its not too bad. Beats the heck out of Shelby! There are actually many courses within a 20 mile radius of where your staying. I am local to the area so I know several of the courses around here in Middle TN. I will be more than glad to help you out with any questions.

Thanks for the tips! I'm headed to Two Rivers in the morning since it's close to the hotel and I can get in and out while the wife is still asleep. Since it's been raining for the past two days, I headed over to Edwin Watts golf shop to look around. While I was there I got set up on the simulator... found out my swing speed, ball speed and all that fun stuff... boosted my ego. Good times.

I played Wednesday morning at Two Rivers. The course was pretty rough, but I could see how it would be a great course in the summer. Yesterday I played the middle and north courses at McCabe and that was great! The north course is very hilly and challenging and I wouldn't hesitate to play there again if I come back when things are a little greener.

One thing I didn't expect was how brown all the courses were. Up here everything is still very green and it's been colder here than in Tennessee. Must be different grass, maybe?

Glad you enjoyed your stay in Nashville. Two Rivers isn't too bad of a course, you are correct, it's nicer in the spring and summer months. I haven't played McCabe in 10-12years. I always thought their greens were like putting on shag carpet. Those Shelby, McCabe and Two Rivers are all owned by the city of Nashville. Maybe next time you come down, I can show you our nice courses!

By the way, did you get out and experience the downtown scene?

Yeah, this was my 4th trip to Nashville this year, but my first as a golfer. We usually stay in the Hilton Garden Inn downtown and walk down Broadway and do all that, but since we were out by the airport this time we couldn't participate in the "activities" too much...

One of the guys I was playing with at McCabe said they completely reworked the north course. They tore out at least one hole to build the driving range and moved the rest of them around to fit the new configuration. The ninth hole on north looks like something straight out of Scotland -- super hilly, the green is buried behind about 4 hills and an entire beach worth of sand. I thought the greens were in pretty good shape, maybe a little slow, but that might have had something to do with the rain on Monday and Tuesday.

Between the weather, the courses and hanging out at Edwin Watts, it was definitely a good trip. Makes me sad that our Golf HQ store is closing for good tomorrow

      I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.

      Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
