I still consider myself to be a 4ish handicapper, because my average score is around 77.  We'll see how it looks when I've posted 20 scores (which hopefully will be by 1 April).

That's not how handicaps work. First of all, only three rounds count if you've played ten. The best three. Your average score is irrelevant - it's a measure of your "potential." Read up here: http://thesandtrap.com/b/rules/whats_your_handicap .

Good info.  Obviously, I didn't think that a HCP was a literal average of strokes over par adjusted for course rating, but neither did I know how complex it was.  I also didn't realize that slope and CR were aimed at different types of golfers.

Still wondering what makes it "official" per USGA, such as the peer review and "club" aspects of the online services.  How do these things work?  Do I need to join a "club?"  If so, how?

Does anyone know how the "peer review" and "club" thing works?  What do I have to do to turn the scores I enter online into an official USGA HCP that I could use to play in a tournament--say registration for the Hawaii State Amateur?  I've never done the HCP thing, so please forgive my ignorance.

Your handicap isn't your average. Your handicap is based on your potential. As far as posting scores and establishing an official USGA handicap I would start here: http://www.hawaiistategolf.org/ . The peer review is there so you can't just keep posting "high" scores to give yourself an inflated handicap. You are required to post a certain percentage of your scores while palying with members of your club in either casual matches or club tournamnets.

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

John,

Thanks for your post - we (MyScorecard) actually allow you to track up and downs and up and down success rates - as well as choosing from 35 other statistics (putts/GIR, FIR, GIR, Sandies, etc) and compare your statistics against the average for golfers with the same handicap (i.e do you get up and down like a 5 handicap, or a 15). You can shoot a note to our support team and they would be glad to show you how to take care of that.

Regards,

Jack & The MyScorecard Team
