Just wanted to get an idea as to how you all figure out how to set up consistantly to the ball. My biggest issues are;

1) I get the ball to far back in my stance

2) I stand to close to the ball

3) My aim will gravitate to the right over time, its pretty slow so it catches me off guard sometimes

I tend to go by the same width in the stance for every full shot with the irons. It might vary a bit, maybe 1-2 inches from 4 iron to PW, but its pretty set. The driver is always slightly more wide. But i don't prescribe by the Jack N's style, were he keeps the ball the same spot but just widens or shortens his stance. I am more, move the ball slighly back for shorter irons, slight more up front for logner irons. Its probably less dramatic since my stance does shrink a bit, if it was the same width then i would need to move the ball around a bit more. But when i think i put my ball in the center of my stance, its actually like 2 ball lengths behind the center of my stance. So how do you determine you know you got the ball in the position you want. I can work on number 2 & 3, thats not to hard, but ball position drives me nuts because my eyes are not telling me the right thing.

I stand behind the ball and trace my eyes on a line from my aim point to the ball and choose a spot maybe 6" in front of the ball. Then I approach the ball, aim my club face perpendicular to the line to the 6" spot I picked, then take my stance.  I generally don't have too much trouble with alignment anymore.

For ball position I work similarly to you.  I've got a pretty much standard stance width for iron shots, like you maybe a tiny bit wider for the longer irons.  Balls middle of the stance for scoring irons, maybe 2" forward of that for a 3i-5i.

I've found for ball position if I pay attention to my body and arms it's very clear where it is.  Set up with weight balanced and your club in the grip and hand position you want, and it's pretty clear to me at least if the ball is more than half a ball away from (my) standard position.

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
