Hi,

I've been playing golf for three years and have got down to a handicap of 13 - about 3 or 4 shots a year - mainly on the strength of my driving and chipping/pitching. What I'd really like to improve is my iron approach play - my GIR rate is only about 30%. I've been playing Cleveland CG7 Black Pearls for the last two years and I'm wondering if a move to something like Titliest AP2's would benefit my game - generally through the thought that it would be easier to shape the ball into the green.

Any thoughts / recommendations / suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Mark

What shape are you hitting now? Do you often find yourself stymied on approach shots or attacking tucked pins? If so, why not focus on putting the ball into a better position off the tee.

Where are you missing the green, and what type of approach shots do you see most often?  If your GIR is at 30% with game-improvement irons, I don't think a set of $1,000 players cavity irons are the ticket.

Agree with this.

In addition, why do you find it necessary to "shape" your shots when your GIR is 30%.  Shaping is generally to hit it closer to the pin.  I'd think at 30% you would be happy anywhere on the green.

The shaft is the engine. The head is the steering.

Don't concentrate on what irons to get, concentrate on what shaft to get and THEN try irons with those shafts.

As mentioned above, shaping at a 13 handicap is not needed. Nice to be able to do but you're far better off hitting to the very middle of each green and then putting from there. Your GIR suggests you're possibly already trying to shape the ball or going aggressive with your approach shots and failing.

How are you missing? Bad aim? short/long? Hook/slice?

If your ball striking isn't that good (to the point of 30% GIR), playing irons beyond your level is going to hurt you more so than help. What you need is GI irons that are properly fitted to you for length, lie, and shaft. Either use what you have now or find a GI set that you like and have them fitted for you. That combined with practice and/or lessons will help you much more than simply buying a set of $1k players irons.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations. For the record most of my misses are pushes to the right. The positive out of this is that I'm getting pretty good at scrambling and getting down in two!

I'll keep my wallet in my pocket and work with what I've got on the practice ground. Those AP2s are damn good looking clubs though........
