During my last round every wedge I hot to the green release about 2 feet past the ball mark. I hit down on the ball and they flew high. I was just curious

as to why the ball does this.

brosef, SAME DEAL. People'll say pich the ball, divot after ball contact, ball first, back in stance, expect that alot. What wedge do you use, and what ball? That could be a factor. Actually the only reason my ball partially checks now is because I bought a (fake but still good) Jaws wedge, and 20XI-S balls.

I use Cleveland wedges with Zip grooves and the least expensive balls I can find. I am not looking to backspin the ball. I am just

wanting to know if anyone can explain way if other indicators say the ball should back spin why does it end up forward

of the ball mark. I am just happy to land the ball on the green.

"least expensive balls I can find" is likely the main issue.

Cheaper balls are normally 2-piece balls aimed at high handicap golfers and have a soft core for easy compression at lower swing speeds (ball goes further with less effort) and a harder skin which will 'bite' less on wedges and thus spin less.

The more expensive balls by comparison have a 3-4 pieces and are aimed at lower handicap players and have a harder core but 1-2 intermediate layers. These balls are normally have a softer skin and 'bite' on a wedge more, creating better spin.

Your best bet is to get a small selection of balls (I'm sure you'll find them when out on the course looking for your own ball) and try them out to figure what does or doesn't work for you. Either that or buy several sleeves of balls to try.

Something else to bear in mind is the angle the ball is landing on versus the amount of spin on the ball. If you're hitting down on the ball to create spin you could be de-lofting the club so although the ball is spinning more, it's landing at a shallower angle and hopping forward. If the ball is not spinning much at all but landing on a steep angle it's a similar situation.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
