What is everyone's thoughts on Range Finders and using them on the course. I was considering purchasing one to help me determine the correct distance instead of guessing. My thoughts are the pros know the exact yardage which helps them determine the correct club. I don't think I will have a personnal caddie anytime soon but I do think it might help me pick the right club if I knew yardages better. How many people use them, how well do they work, which type do you use and did it help you out in scoring?

I'm currently reviewing the SkyCaddie, and soon I'll be reviewing the Bushnell range finders, I think. So if you can wait about three weeks, you'll know my answers on both.

The quick review of the SkyCaddie is that it's nice, but the computer interface for it kinda sucks. Forces you to use IE, too.

To get really good yardage you'd have to spend some money... the "under $100" range finders (I had 2 different ones) don't do it for me - hard to know, what it is focusing on. Another minus is that you can't figure out with them i.e. how far is it to the end of the fairway, to the edge of the bunker etc., since there is no "object" to focus on.
On unknown courses (while travelling) I'm using SkyGolf GPS (If I'm lucky and the GPS map is available...). It's not too accurate (+/- 6yds), but works perfect as an yardage book. Exact distances still have to be stepped off. I can't understand why USGA doesn't allow to use them, even if scores are used for hcp. I guess when you play on a course, where carts have GPS installed - you're supposed to look away too

    • Day 66 (15 May 26) - Played in Friday men’s shootout - solid round of 81 (39/42) 7 of the 11 pars were up and down 1 putts (29 total).  Short game came to the rescue….
    • Thanks, Matt, for the AI summary.   I found the probability interesting.   It was mentioned that the host talked to a college coach, and no college coaches were knocking down his door trying to recruit him.   He was on the JV team last year, this year being the only time on varsity.
    • I started taking my son with me when he was 2-1/2 but only with my regular group.  I asked before I started taking him if they were ok with it.  Everyone was ok with it and they let him ride with them often. And, they had permission to scold him if he was doing anything wrong.  I think the first time I took him and played with strangers he was almost 4.  By then, he knew golf etiquette and was very well behaved.   If the father of the kid in question here did not take proper measures to control the kid...it is not the kid's fault.  The father should know better.  Being the type of person I am, I would have probably politely said something to the kid myself and if the father was not taking care of any mess he made in bunkers I would have definitely asked "Hey, you going to rake the mess he made? How would you like to land in there and have to play your next shot from there?"

    • One has to wonder what in the world could be going thru her mind standing over the ball and with each one of those take aways and not hitting the ball.  My brain would lock up completely.  If she played with the guys and gals I play with someone would inevitably yell "While we are young" (which we are not) or "just hit the damn thing"
