Shafts on your woods?

Hi

I've been thinking about getting my driver and 3 wood reshafted after buying a wilson dxi 5 wood with a Aldila Voodoo VS-7 (S-Core). I average around 240-250 yards (carry) with the five wood and can really feel the shaft loading/unloading through the swing. I know that the best thing I can do before investing money in a driver is to go to a fitter to find out what works best for me, but I was wondering....if I get such spectacular results with the shaft/club combo on the Wilson 5 wood, would it stand to reason that I should get similar results with the same shaft, with a driver or 3 wood?

IMHO, no, the shafts on the OEM clubs vary so much that it is probably just luck that you found a shaft that fits you perfect.  You would be better off going to a fitter and have then check the frequency of the shaft you like and find an after market shaft that matches.

My brother and I bought the same OEM driver with the same brand of shaft, mine regular, his stiff.  He was having problems hitting his driver all over the place so he went to a fitter, when they checked the frequency of the shaft his was actually softer than mine.  The fitter got him into a shaft that matched his swing and all was solved (damn fitter!)

Two things are at play here: Player fitting and shaft quality.

First, did the person get a full driver fitting with launch monitor data, or just hit 10 shots with driver A and driver B and pick one?

I got a driver fitting in fall 2008. First the fitter confirmed I needed to dump stiff for regular flex - I suspected that on my own - and then I hit a half-dozen drivers and compared them on launch data and feel. My Callaway HyperX Tour won out over five other contenders.

Shaft works quite well, and the driver ties or betters newer TM Superfast or Callaway RazrHawk drivers. The shaft is a Fuji E360, which appeared first as an after-market shaft before Callaway picked up a version for the HyperX Tour. When I swing smoothly, it's a super club.

Next is shaft quality. I have talked to a couple of custom club makers and some GolfWorks guys on this. Does the shaft have a good design and good manufacturing QC? OEM QC is often less stringent than after-market. But, is it a matter of a couple of bad shafts, or do half the people who bought the driver with shaft X bring it back in complaining? Both happen.

Also, the custom club guys say that after-market shafts on occasion have a bad batch where half the shafts are problems. But, less so than with OEMs.

Then there's shaft profile. If it's designed primarily as a distance shaft, expect to spray the ball around a little.

For OP, a matching 3W with that shaft likely would work (assuming good QC). But, you might want a different shaft in your driver. It depends on what shot shape and trajectory you want from your driver.
