hi guys, i am 15 years old and my high school golf season is about to start, lately i haven been able to hit any of my clubs off the deck, especially my long irons and fairway woods. I can't figure out what im doing wrong, i have been trying to hit them just like i was last year but it just isn't working i thought it was because i wasnt hitting down on the ball, but i dont think that is the case. i cant get any elevation on the ball and when i do, it slices way to the right, some help to figure it out before the season starts would really be appreciated. thanks.

Hey man i know what ur dealing with im 13 and golf season is next year for me but im having the same problem. What i was told is that you want to hit down on the ball but not to much. Also try working on getting a full body rotation and making sure your clearing your hips through the swing and at impact your body is facing the target. At first try hitting these clubs a couple times off of a tee to give yourself some confidence and then pratice with a full and complete swing but a little slower to make sure you have a full rotation.

Take a few practice swings before you set up ov the ball brush the turf on each swing while thinking "80 percent". Take the same wing after you stand over the ball. Let the club do the work rath than swinging harder for a longer club. It sounds to me like you may be lifting from tension by over-swinging. A low ball flight is indicative of poor contact. Swing easier and stay in a nd you should clear better. A half hour with a PGA pro is a great way to start a season.

I love the advice to think about hitting only 80% speed. That is always good to think, but especially when you are at the driving range.

My question to you is where is your aimpoint when you are making your downswing?

When my friend was doing a similar thing at the range, I encouraged him to just focus an inch ahead of the ball (i.e. toward the target) and his impact immediately improved.

i don't know how you've been practicing but for me, i've been hitting off of mats all winter.  the first few times on the course are always the most frustrating.  i think i train myself to not hit down as much on my irons as to not hurt myself with the mats.  and then on the course, i hit A LOT of thin shots, forgetting what it was like to hit off of grass and letting my swing bottom out.

not sure if that's the case with you?  but the advice about focusing an inch in front of the ball is very helpful in general.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
