I am brand new to golf. I know just about nothing. Please excuse me if this sort of thread is forbidden.

I have a full set of Taylormade R7 Irons including both wedges, I have a Bobby Grace putter, I have an Adams 18* hybrid and I just ordered a Callaway IQ driver...11*. Of course I have a bag too. Am I good with these clubs? Do I really need woods or another hybrid? Also, Do I need to have golf shoes to go out on the course?

Thanks for the advice.

I'm assuming that your iron set includes the PW and the SW? I like having a gap wedge that bridges the distance between those two wedges. I'd also recommend getting a  3-wood. I really like Taylormade ones, but test some out and see what works best for you. You might try one that goes with your driver if you like it. It will give you a better option on long par 5s than the hybrid. These clubs should fill in gaps you will have with your current set.

In the blue and tan grom Bag:

Fairway Woods '07 Burner 15* and 18*
Irons 4-PW r7 XDWedges 47*, 52*, 58* CG14,Putter TiffanyBall One Tour D

Yes it does include both wedges...is a gap wedge 54*? If so I know of a really nice Taylormade I can get at a deal. I have an old Callaway Big Bertha 3 wood that I would consider using if need be unless you really think it is not good...it has to be 15 years old...Do you mean a fairway 3 wood or a hybrid 3 wood?

Ray - welcome to golf!  What a great game!

Really, you're all set with what you have.  IMO, as a beginner you don't need a full set.  I wouldn't spend the money on anymore clubs, hold off until you get a little more accustomed to the game and know what you really need to fit your game.  You'll save yourself a bit of money this way too.  Maybe a good idea is to spend you money you save on clubs to get a series of lessons, which will pay back your game much more than any new club would.

Don't worry about the 3-wood being old.  Yes, technology is better these days, but at this point all you really need to focus on is hitting the ball well on a consistent basis.  I played an old Ping Eye 2 persimmon wood 3-wood for about 10 years (it was older than that when I got it) and I hit it almost as good as the one I currently play (240 yards with a slight draw, vs. 255 with a slight draw).

I really think your best bet if you want to get better is save your money on more clubs and invest it in lessons.  You have a nice beginners set to work with.

If these clubs fit you fairly well, they should get you through the first couple of seasons. For beginners, 10 or 11 clubs is plenty. You can add in the other three clubs you're allowed as you determine what you need for your game. Outfit your bag to help your game , not to impress people.

As tefunk said, get some lessons. Learn it right from the start - breaking bad habits it tough.

If you have a PW (pitching wedge) and a SW (sand wedge), that's enough to start. You can add a gap wedge in season 2, after you realize what the gap is.

As for shoes, you can play in athletic shoes which have small nubs. Do not wear dress shoes to play in - you have zero traction, and can slip on slopes and actually injure yourself. Look for golf shoes during Christmas clearance.

Focus, connect and follow through!
