It's something that really intrigues me, as does golf architecture in general. But it seems to be an arcane discipline.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the steps one would have to take to become firstly a slope rater, and secondly a golf architect? I imagine for the latter there is probably no set course.

Contact the U.S.G.A. and ask them if there is a course rating group set up in your area.

Offer your services.

You can also ask them if you can get some of the manuals used for course ratings.

That's pretty much what I did except you may want to contact the local Golf Association rather than talking to the USGA directly. Or ask the USGA what your local associate is if you aren't sure.

To explain. There was a spam post just before this one that was removed by the administrators obviously.  Something to do with escort services.

Please report spam - don't reply to it.

I didn't reply to the spam.

I posted below the post.

I should have reported it and will next time.

The same spam was in another thread.  But it looks like administration got it.

You replied. You didn't quote, but you replied, or you wouldn't have had to clarify what your post meant, right?

No. I didn't reply directly to the post which would have given the spammer the reply he needed.

I replied in a separate post and to see it the spammer would have had to come back into the thread and you could have nailed him.

I have never reported anyone in my life so please forgive me for the miscue.  It was a bunch of garble and I had no idea it was spam till you mentioned it.

I thought it was one of our nutcases posting.  How can I identify spam as such to report it.

Can we get this thread back on topic?

For those that are currently slope raters... Can you explain what you do, the task at hand?  I'm just curious.  Thanks!

If you can find someone in your area through the U.S.G.A. they would have a manual outlining exactly how a course is measured and how each hole is rated and the basis of how it's done.

These manuals are passed out to all individuals who rate courses for handicap purposes.

    • Shot a 37 today! Palmer Course, PGA National. Really fun. 6/9 GIR, no lost balls. The double and the bogey were both three putts from like 35 feet or so.  The birdie at the last was really fun. I stood over that fifteen footer and thought wow I’m really about to make this, aren’t I? And I hearted it. Really fun. It’s like 9000 degrees outside but I battled through it well. Good times.
    • I had been in a bit of a slump for the month of June. Handicap index has slowly risen, and there were few sub-80 scores. Today was a different story at Leslie Park GC. Lots of solid shots, GIR's, up & downs, for a 77 (7.8 differential). As with most rounds, there were a few loose shots and crappy putts, but it was a good day.
    • Day 632 - 2026-06-26 Stayed after to do some Skillest lessons and get some practice in.
    • Day 6  (26 Jun 26) - Played 18 today in the Friday men's group shootout.  Would love to say it was an awesome round, but it wasn't  - had a tough day with the putter (especially on the front - short putts missing left or right or just short - just could not get a feel for the greens).
