Ever since I took up golf, I've had trouble aiming the ball with any sort of consistency.  Until this year, I never really paid attention to where I was aiming while on the range because I was focused on improving my ballstriking ability.  Now that I'm comfortable with that, I'm trying to become much more accurate.  I realized on the range this past week that I have a fairly open stance at address.  My feet might be pointed down the fairway, but my shoulders and swingpath are pointed slightly to the right.  I've always had to close my clubface a little to avoid a push and it seems like I might have pinpointed the problem finally.  Can anyone suggest some drills or some way to begin improving my stance at address?

Where the feet are pointed aren't as important as to where the hips are shoulders are aligned.  Sam Snead would aim his feet right and shoulders left of where his feet were aimed and hit pull draws, Tom Lehman aims his feet left but everything else right and hits push draws.  These alignments just help where you want to have your swing direction, ball starts where the face is pointing at impact.  To check you can either film yourself or just put a club across your chest to make sure your aiming the swing direction where you want.

So as long as someone is consistent in how they align themselves, it doesn't really matter what their stance is?  If that's the case, then I can certainly learn to aim well with how I hit instead of trying to change it.

To be clear, I would recommend you aim stance, hips and shoulders to where you want your swing direction to favor.  Just makes things more simple.

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%!

    • So the question was posed today by some of my friends.  Is a pitch mark the same as a divot?  I thought NO, but they argued if your ball lands in another player's divot (made by club during a swing) this was the same as a pitch mark, i.e. the ball mark made when the ball lands
    • Original definition use to or still is how far offline you hit it. It might be better to think of it as consistency in retaining favorable launch conditions to optimize distance.   That heat map showed a gigantic 0-3% loss in ball speed. That is absurd. The true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. Good luck telling the difference if the sweet spot is under 3% in a sizable area. Especially considering variation in launch angle, spin, and outdoor weather.
