So after an almost 15 year break I'm looking to finally get back into the game.  I played golf very heavily through my teens/high school years, at around 18/19 I got pretty burnt out from the competitive play and just stopped playing.  I'm looking to get back into the game now about 15 years later just for fun and I've noticed a lot of change in equipment and golf balls since I left the game.  When I left the game I carried a 2 handicap.  I've played a total of 9 holes in the last 10 years in which I managed to shoot an even par score on and this year have hit the driving range a handful of times.  I figure with all the new technology and hybrids and what not I'm in need of some new equipment or at least something to make the game a little easier.  I'll probably at most be a weekly golfer so while I can still strike the ball fairly well I probably need something a bit more forgiving on the iron side.  I'm also wondering about hybrids and what not to replace my longer irons.  So here's what I currently have in the bag:

Great Big Bertha driver

King Cobra 3 wood

Maxfli Austrailian Blade 2-PW

Cleveland SW & GW

Ping Eye 2 LW

Putter

I picked up a Taylor Made Superfast driver that I found on the cheap over the weekend and it's amazing that mishits with that driver fly a good 20 yards past a well hit shot with my Great Big.  I'm probably good there but wondering about fairway woods and hybrids at this point.  I liked carrying a stronger 3 wood then but not sure if that's necessary now? I can hit the 2 and 3 iron fairly well but again with being a weekly player I probably want to go to something more forgiving so should I look into a hybrid for those clubs? As far as the irons go, I've been looking to replace them with some Ping Eye 2's but also would like opinions/suggestions on what's out there for newer stuff.  I'm not too picky on brand, more picky about what the club looks like (I know it's night and day on looks from the Maxfli's to the Pings..lol) I don't need too much forgiveness as I can still hit the blades good but would like something a little more forgiving. I'm looking to keep costs down as much as possible, I don't need the fanciest or latest and greatest.   Anyway, a lots changed over the years and I'd like some education and even some golf ball suggestions would be good as well, when I left the game I was a Titliest Professional user.

Whats changed most:

Graphite Shafts have improved a lot.

They jacked up the lofts on the irons. (a modern 7 has the loft of an older 6, so you think you hit the ball further.)

Some irons also have longer shafts and more upright lies.

There's a better selection of forged cavity backs that fit between blades and "game improvement"

With """new and improved""" models every year used clubs are bargains.

I'd suggest doing a full bag fitting at a place that does fittings. I've been playing a driver that does not give me optimum distance for the past about 8 years. That is now changing since I've gotten on a Trackman launch monitor. Drivers this year people seem to like a lot are the Titleist D2/D3 910, Ping i20, and the Taylormade R11s and RBZ. Fairway wood wise again I'd look into all those same companies for the fairway wood version of those clubs. When it comes to irons I'd say you'll probably want cavity backs. Mizuno MP59, Titleist AP2, and Ping i20's are all great irons. Just realize, like said earlier. Some irons have more loft than others. From waht I can tell the Mizuno MP and Ping i20 irons are deflofted in the mid-short irons by anywhere from 1-2*. 2* equates to about half a club so don't get too hung up about how far you hit them. Worry about the quality and how well it feels to you.

Again I'd suggest getting fit to find what's best for you. This is really only my opinion on some of the that people seem to like more and what I personally prefer. GET FIT!

910F 14.25 with Diamana stiff shaft

 AP2 712 5-PW with Dynamic Gold S300 shaft

 54 and 60

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
