I have been playing for a couple months now. Completed seven total rounds and hit a few hundred range balls. Just shot a 100 last game with no mulligans or gimmie's. When starting I bought a Nike SQ Mach Speed Black driver and borrowed a set of irons, 3-lw from my uncle. I have no fairway woods and I want a rescue / hybrid club, I'm just not sure what shaft stiffness to get on those clubs.

The Nike SQ that I'm using atm has a Fubuki regular flex shaft, but now that I'm buying a 3w, I'm thinking about changing my driver shaft to stiff and getting stiff on my 3w. The reason I want to do this is... I have been hitting lots of 300+ drives and clocked my swing speed at about 100 average.

So my question is, should I be swinging stiff flex instead of regular on my driver and 3w? and maybe the same stiffness on my hybrid / rescue club also?

Thank you Jimmy

Sincerely, Jim

With all of those 300+ yard drives as a newbie - you should probably get extra extra stiff clubs.

I would probably get fitted by the guy that gave you lessons since he taught you to hit it so far right off the bat.

Get fitted.  It is not nearly as simple as "Swing speed = x?  Get this flex!"  There is alot more to it.  I swing about 99-102.  I use a senior flex and hit it fine.  Go get fitted; its not just a table where you look up swing speed on one side and flex on the other.

What ball do you use?

Hitting it 300 yards with a 100 mph swing speed as a beginner is pretty impressive.  You must hit it in the center quite often to get that distance with that speed.

Check out this graph.  100 mph swing speed has about a 225 yard carry. Las Vegas has dry fairways and lots of wind, but the important number is swing speed, not total distance, to determine the shaft you need.  Sure, get fitted to find the best shaft for your swing type, but chances are it will be an S flex.

Thanks for the info, I've read some things about faster swingers using less stiff clubs, but, just wanted to get the general opinion on the subject. Doesn't Tiger use Regular flex on his Driver? Pretty sure I'm going with stiff flex, it seems to add up mathematically for me lol. If for some reason I dint like the stiff shafts, I have no problem changing them. It would only bee three clubs, Driver, 3W, and 3Hybrid. My irons are loaners atm and when I buy my new set here in a couple months, I will for sure get fitted for them.

What ball do I use? lol..... Lots of different ones atm haha. My friend lives on a course in town that gets a decent amount of balls in the yard. I saved all the Pro V1's and Pro V1x's, I have lots of both kinds but have not hit any yet. I know my farthest drive was hit with a MAXFLI 326 yards about, but I have been using all sorts of balls. I tried to split them up in to groups but there is just not enough of each kind to play an entire round without me loosing all of one kind.

Sincerely, Jim

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
