Thrash Talk: Davis Love III

Well, I would like for everyone to give my column Thrash Talk a read this week and give me some opinions on it.

Will DL3 ever regain his top 10 form, or will he continue to drop down the world rankings and end up in the middle of the pack again.

He just don't have that same aura about him as he did the last decade in my opinion, and I was wondering if it was just me or not.

Let me know what you think, as feedback is always helpful and makes for great discussion as well.

The guys is averaging over $100,000 per event this year and you are saying he's in a slump? Compared to his previous record maybe, but I'll take that slump any year of my life.

You also say he has to regain his former top 5 status or fall back into the pack. What makes you think he can't stay right where he is - somewhere between the top 5 and the "pack" as you put it?

Sometimes I wonder where the motivation is to pick apart an elite golfer like this. Anyone that plays the game with any sort of consistency knows that golf is a game of peaks and valleys. The difference on tour between a 66 and a 76 is so miniscule that even the pros sometimes offer little solution to what makes that difference.

Some days you sink every putt within 10 feet, and the next day you couldn't hit the hole if it was as big as a basketball hoop.

I wouldn't rush out and proclaim to the world that this is some major crisis, but rather just one guys opinion on one of the elite golfers in the world. So, the guy hasn't won recently - big deal. As this past weekend's event in New Orleans proved, sometimes it's better to be lucky then good, anyday.

Craig Perks is another example I can think of. He backs into a win at the Players Championship a few years ago and he hasn't seen a sniff of anything since. What has Todd Hamilton done since his British Open miracle? Care to name any other major championship winners who would otherwise be unknown? Rich Beem anyone? And would you be a John Daly fan (would he still be on tour) if it weren't for his PGA Championship?

So, rather then sit back and admire these guys for the skill and professionalism that they put forth week in and week out, we sit on the sidelines and over-analyze and strip these guys down to bare nakedness. What a shame that we can't focus on more important things in life.

How boring would it be to just watch and enjoy? The media is always going to try and find things to pick apart, and with all due respect, that is the point of Thrash Talk. But I am very glad I have disagreements, that is always fun in my opinion.

And I never said the guy wouldn't stay right where he is. I said I felt he was overrated at the time being, and I still think that. I also said he was a favorite of mine and that I wanted him to break out and win a few times.

I just stated it how I see it, and you just stated it how you see it. I respect you 100% for what you said, but you have to understand it's my job to find things to discuss with the public as well.

The money you mentioned is petty in golf these days by the way. The top 125 in the world get paid serious cash, so saying he is winning $100,000 is impressive, but not near as impressive as it once was. And it is quite obvious to anyone who watches golf every week that DL3 is not as good as he has been in the last decade.

But with that being said, I would love to see him win numerous times and eventually get into the Hall of Fame. It's just his current status that I wrote about. And I'm sticking to it.

And finally, I respect every single golfer on the PGA Tour, even if they are 500th in the world. They still have talent and have my honest respect for being where they are. But that don't mean we have to cheer for everyone to do good or always just sit back and say nothing about any of them.

Lets face it, Davis Love III has been a pro since 1985 and he's not as young as he used to be. You aren't 14 on the list of the worlds best golfers because you are some kind of slouch, but I'm not sure where he's got to go. He's been suffering back pain (sucks to get old) and isn't that young anymore.

When you look at the guys ahead of him, it seems unlikely that he's going to claw and scratch his way to the number one in the world. Tiger, Vijay, Ernie, Phil, Retief, Adam Scott, and a few other pretty good golfers are in his way. Not only that, he's got a whole field of up and comers working their butts off to win. You've got to be pretty darn good to go out and compete every week on the PGA Tour.

I like DLIII and think he's got game because being 14th in the world is impressive, but he's not the same as he used to be and his potential for dominating the game goes down each year. Thats all part of the fun of getting older.

DL3 is a very average PROFESSIONAL golfer. He will never win another major in my opinion and most likely with his back ailments and personal problems and his most apparent lack of desire his best golfing days will most like come when he joins the seniors.

Yummy. The irony of it all is that after he won the Players Championship his brother called him right as he stopped at the Georgia border to empty the septic tank. His brother said "You win the Players and still empty your own septic tank." What a guy.

With the cost of gas these days $100,000 won't cover his fuel costs for his motor home.

I don't even want to know how much he spends on that thing. From Direct TV to gas to insurance, glad it's not mine.
