I could be wrong but I think the intention here is that Tiger and Phil wouldn't say they almost always chip to 2 feet and 'nearly chip 2 in every 9 holes' because they don't . .and perhaps was suggesting that the OP doesn't, either.

I would not be surprised if they talked smack during high school, but since that was about 20 or more years ago and there was no real internet presence then, we'll just have to use our imaginations. I highly doubt they were thinking about just making their varsity team and based on how agressive young players are, I have no doubt he almost chips in a couple times every nine holes. I know I did at that age - sure didn't leave myself within 2 feet every time though : (

Work hard on short game. That I would say is the key to making any team's varsity squad. During your tryout don't let your nerves or bad shots get the best of you. If you need to, go to your local bookstore and purchase one of Dr. Bob Rotella's golf psychology books they will help a lot.

Have Fun and play hard,

    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
    • I use GPS;  it may not be as accurate, but neither am I.
    • Back in my Army days a "gooch" was a particular part of the anatomy. Example, say Okeechobee is the b-hole of Florida, then Belle Glade would be the gooch. Seems he wears his name well.
    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
