Shorten Driver Length?

Quick question for anyone with an opinion...I have an 07/08 Original Taylormade Burner (I love it and hard to give up). I average around 280-290 with it. I am thinking about taking about 3/4 in off the 46 in shaft so that I might have more control with it and possible hit more fairways. My reasoning for possible doing this are I hit the new Ping i20 yesterday (WOW Loved it) and it is 45 1/4 inches in length. I felt like I had great control, hit more fairways, and it added about 30-50 yards to my drive, but I felt like I could get after it a little more because of the shorter club length. I also understand that technology has changed even in the past 5 years. But if I were to keep the Burner and made the adjustments would it help me out in my control column? Any thoughts, opinions and comments are welcome.

The average driver length on the PGA Tour is 44.5".

I just cut my shaft down today from 45.5 to 43.5. HUGE difference in where the ball is hitting, and control. In fact, it gives me even more distance just because it's easier to hit the sweet spot. Definitely a big yes from me.

I play the iMix system and bought a shaft for my FT-iZ head and put the adapter on it (after spine aligning of course) and then cut the butt end to make it play 45 and 3/4 inches. Then after hitting it at the range, I realized in my haste to build it, I neglected to tip the shaft 3/4 inches to compensate for the iMix adapter. I decided to remove the adapter, tip it the 3/4 inch and put it back together. It will be interesting to see how different it hits at a shorter length.

So I shortened my driver from 46 in to 45.25 in and it has made a huge difference in control, speed, and distance. Love the new feel.

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.

      Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
