Hi. I have just started playing this addictive game this year. My handicap is 20.6. I can hit a long ball and am starting to feel like I need something nicer for around the greens. I have been using cheap top flites.

I found a Callaway HX hot ball and decided to use it. It flew long and straight and really soft of the club. Now my top flites feel like rocks!

Only problem is the Callaways cost upwards of $50 a dozen over here. Not sure that I can justify this much for balls yet as I still lose them occasionally. (the Callaway lasted 13 holes).

Is there something similar? I can get Nike power distance soft and precept laddies for $40 a doz. How would these compare? Any others I should look at?

Cheers

About $50ish for "good condition used". Have seen "refurbished" prov1s for $45 for a dozen. Have seen them new for $80 or $90. So I guess the next question is... Used prov1s( Im sure I dont need a ball this good yet!) or new Callaway or similar. I certainly like the idea of a new ball over a used or refurbished one.

hehe that is online! I can get 'em way cheaper from the states but the shipping kills it. Think I am gonna try some of the nikes first and go from there.

Here http://www.golfballs.co.nz/titleist.htm can you get some Titleist NXT Tour at a resonable price, I assume that the prices are in NZL dollars which would make a dozen for 20 USD.

I personally thinks these balls have the characteristics that you are looking for , a softer feel to the club and a good distance with a nice feel around an on the green.

I am not sure what the exchange and shipping rates would be from Canada, but you might want to try Golftown.com. They are a Canadian site and they sell the Callaway HX Tour for $49.95 / dozen... Nike Ones are the same price... Pro V1's are $56.95 / dozen... Srixon Z-URC are $49.95 as are the Bridgestone Tour B330's and the Taylor Made TP's

As for the better quality value balls that reportedly have a soft feel they have the Maxfli Tour Fire for $34.95 / Dozen (I really want to try these) and the Titleist New NXT Tour for $38.95 / Dozen... The Callaway HX Hot are $29.95/ dozen... They also have Wilson Staff Tx4 Tour for $39.95 / Dozen...

Anyway, here is a link... http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/s...-balls-C9.aspx

Really good suggestion. I was talking to a guy at Edwin Watts the other day and he told me that the Titleist Rep told him they call the NXT Tour the poor mans ProV1. I played these balls for quite some time and liked them. However, I feel I am ready to change and I am currently testing different balls which is another suggestion for you

"Saks" . You need to find a ball that works for you in refernce to all around performance depending on your swing and level of play. I am currently in the stage of testing the HX Tour and HX Tour 56. I first played rounds with both versions of the ProV1's and now am trying the HX models. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I purchase on line used NXT in mint condition for $12.00. There is a rumor floating around that the new Top Flight D2 is comparable to the Pro V1. Probably hype, but for $15.00 they are worth playing a round or two with, IMO.

I've been on the search for the perfect ball for me too. I started with Top flight until I used a Bridgstone (not sure which one) and really liked it. Since then I've used Nike mojo / juice, Titleist SoLo / ProV1/ProV1x, Pinnacle gold, Callaway HX-Hot / Big Bertha / warbird.
I really like the Nike mojo and played with that for a month until I found some ProV's and have been playing with them ever since. But I'm due now and with the Price of Pro V's I want a good ball that isn't going to break my wallet if I lose a few.

I too want to know how the new Top Flight D2 balls are? They have 3 different types though. Of course I probably want the green Feel ball.

How much of a difference is the NXT series ball differ from the Pro V's??

In my opinion a lot. The pro v1 has a much better feel around the green then the nxt does. They both really feel the same off the driver and irons though.

Thanks for that. I picked up a dozen of the Nike power distance super softs for $20 on trade me (our version of ebay). Will try those this weekend. A dozen of the nxt tours for $25 in mint condition looks pretty good as well. Might have to pick up some and try them. At least this way I wont need new balls for a while!

Any thoughts on using these "refurbished" balls? I guess you have to use the...once I've teed of once with a new ball its used anyway theory!

If you want a cheap ball that isnt that bad try the Top Flite Strata TL Tour. Its made of three piece construction so it will spin more then your two piece balls youve been using and it has a urethane cover also for better feel. All your high price balls have urethane covers on them. Try them out you wont be disappointed.

Update: (If anyone cares!!)

Played the Nike power distance balls this weekend. Am really impressed with them. No less distance the the Callaway HX Hot or Tour. Nice feel on the club and while they dont spin back on the greens, that is more than likely me more than anything. They land and take one bounce then basically stop. Suits my game, I'm just happy to be on the green! Used a pro v1 the other day, landed it on the green and it spun back off! Couldnt believe it. Dont think my skill level quite requires them yet!

Also shot a career best 86 with the Nikes today...( well just one of them...it made it the whole round!)

Durable too, have got 35 holes out of one and its still almost brand new!

    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
