Hi Folks,

I am looking to upgrade my set of irons and I am wondering what the best type of set would be the best for my game moving forward.

Usually I shoot in the mid to high 90's (I've been as low as 91 but typically I am around a 95-98).

I've been playing for about 5 years and I have really improved my ball striking the past couple of seasons. My main problem is getting off the tee with consistency.

I play with a used set of Wilson Staff PI5's (Steel 3-PW) and I really like the way they have developed my swing. I am making consistent, crisp contact and this year I have learned to work the ball (although I still mishit 2 or 3 out of 10).

I am looking to upgrade to a set of irons that will let me improve my accuracy and consistency while still enabling me to work the ball and get better. I've been looking into Taylormade R11's and Titeliest AP1's.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks-

If you are not constantly breaking 90, you are likely in a place where "working" the ball should be mostly about developing a go-to shot -- my choice is straight.

Your current clubs seem to be "better player clubs." I'd look for more of a game improvement set to gain additional forgiveness. The R11's and the AP1's are more crossovers which should help and claim to be what you want once you've dropped your index under 10. Right now, consistency is more likely about your swing than the clubs. I put a lot of stock in Mark Crossfield's video reviews. Here is his comparison between the two you are thinking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Zlg9BJzIg&feature;=relmfu

If your current set are serving you well enough, at least consider dumping the 3 and 4 irons and getting hybrids. New hybrids would be easier to hit well and might cure your new-club itch.

If you buy new clubs, get a static fitting for length and lie and check your swing speed for shafts. A $20 set of clubs that fit your desired swing are better than a $1000 set of clubs that do not. Misfit clubs create bad swing compensations that often create inconsistent results.

There are lots of more forgiving and cool clubs. Be sure to look at Mizuno JPX-800 Pro's, JPX-800's and JPX-800 HD's. The HD set comes with integrated hybrids.

Go into a golf shop with a launch angle, test out the irons and fine the ones you get the best spin and consistency with. Buy those.

Better advise for a 3.6 handicap than a 20. Unless you plan to keep your current swing, I suggest you get a STATIC fitting for the swing you want to have -- correct distance from ball and ball position for length and lie.

more then likely what he will get fit with will be something that is a forgiving club with good spin for any player, once he gets low handicap I think it would be important to upgrade to higher end clubs to peak your play, I think those types of clubs tho would be less forgiving for an amateur so I wouldn't suggest something like that at his current handicap.

    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
