I have a favorite old club...a 24 degree Cleek...andcarried it in my bag for a long time until I got a similarly lofted hybrid.  That old cleek is a Taylormade Metalwood from the 80's.

Recently one of my golfing buddies gave me a 15 degree Cleek...same brand, same design, that he'd bought it at a garage sale for $3 dollars.  So I put a new grip on the $3 dollar cleek and hit some balls with it.  What a sweet hitting club.  Kinda like the old TM Metalwood Fairway 3 but with the turf ridges on the bottom and not quite as big a clubhead.  Since I don't carry a 2 iron, I am tempted to put it in my bag for a few rounds and maybe leave my 3 wood at home.

Cleek...I just love that word!     Almost as much as Mashie.

Modern golf seems to have gotten away from some of the traditions that made it such a glorious game to begin with.

Voman I know this reply is quite late but I just saw your post and had to comment. I also found my Cleek (19 degree) at a thrift store for a couple of bucks. Bought it on a whim and it has kicked my Callaway Diablo 5 wood and Nickent 21 degree hybrid out of the bag. I don't know what it is about this club but it has become my "go to" club from long range. Incredibly consistent with a boring trajectory. Works terrific out of sand and much better out big the rough than any of the several. modern hybrids that live in my garage now. I only use my 16 degree 3 wood off the tee or perfect fairway lies as the Cleek hits almost as long. Great club!

Sounds similar to my Taylor Raylor from about 1990. Small head, 16*, turf ridges on the bottom. Looks like the fairway heads from the period, but a little smaller. I would probably be better off score wise if I only carried this one wood and left the driver at home.

    • Day 47: simulator day! Played St. Andrew’s and shot a +1. Not bad, especially with having to putt at this simulator set up. Had about 5 minutes at the end to work on some feels as well.
    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
