I know I need to get fitted, thats a given, but I would just like a starting point to at least sound educated when I speak to somebody at Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy.    I'd love to hear about aftermarket shafts that have worked well for those who have replaced the stock shaft on their driver.   I read alot of guys like the Proforce V2 and the Aldila NVS & Wasabi.    Oh, and I'd like to keep the price of the shaft well under $100 if possible.

FYI - I swing around 90 mph on the monitor (my strategy with the driver is to intentionally not swing 100%, nice easy tempo to keep it in play - not interested in maximum distance, but control), I always hit too high a ball for my liking  (would like to drop down the flight some), and my current stiff driver shaft is significanlty longer than any driver I've ever had, but is unbelievably unforgiving - the littlest wrist or swing path error, and it slices dramatically - never had such a finicky, unforgiving shaft .

You could probably go with a stiff flex shaft, I know you didn't say it, but it'll tend to be a bit more "forgiving" and will help get the ball flight down (look for a higher kick point shaft).

Honestly what I would do is go to a site like this: http://media.titleist.com/images/titleist/pdfs/US/2012/flipbook/Custom_Catalog_Spring/index.html - start to look at the launch angles listed, the weight, etc. If you can find it you might want a low-launching stiff shaft that's heavier (since you don't care about swinging as fast as you can).

My pro gave me this advice as well. He put an Aldila NV 75 gram stiff shaft in mine about a year ago. Right away I felt like I was more in control of the ball, and I have been happy with the purchase since. My swing speed on the monitor is between 95 and 100 mph, so pretty similar to yours.

Thanks - never knew there were so many shaft choices !!    In terms of weight, what would a "heavier" shaft weigh by comparison to others ??     Thanks

You've got to watch it and find a balance when it comes to shafts.

Like Erik, I'd say look for a mid to high kick shaft if your flight is too high and it's not a swing issue.

But beware - of low torque shafts. I've found that low torque shafts can (I said "can") seem unforgiving and make you work harder, and get you out of your swing. It's one reason UST has a similar class of shafts with 3 different torque ratings (those UST's get good reviews by the way - "silver, red, and black" for different torque)

As to weight, the new generation of lite weight shafts are better for accuracy than old generation lite weights. I play a 55g Fuji Blur - mid kick with 4.0 torque rating in a 12 deg driver, and it is accurate and "forgiving." I don't feel like I must work it hard. And I love the Tltieist "made for" Bassara W - high torque, but for me, it's very accurate in fairways - an ultraliteweight in a fairway! - and I need a lower kick in fairways to get the ball up. I should add that torque is not measured consistently between manufacturers so it's one of those things you've got to try to see what fits.

The point is - delete most of what you know about shafts and study up on a new generation and what people are discovering, and then find out what you think you need, in general, and experiment.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
