Also, it's helped me improve my ball striking from the fairway with the 5W. This is mostly due to practice, but I used to be entirely unable to hit a wood off a fairway. I've been landing anywhere from 50 yards out, to front edges on Par 5's lately.

Personally, I'm much more accurate with my driver.

The only time I don't take driver is when I would out drive the back of the fairway or there is too much trouble in the area it would land.

Single digit handicap

I used to be of that philosophy. I haven't had a 5W in 10 years. Really surprised at how far the newer ones go.

I can only get mine to go 215-230, with roll. But for some reason my 3w and 5w don't get much loft and roll out very excessively.

I have a similar situation and I'm not sure why.  I will say that swinging my 5W feels different than the driver.  I can feel the club head more and find it easier to get a nice "whipping" motion through the ball.

Hello goof for 270 (range 260-280) with my 5wood, 290 (280-300) with my 3wood, driver 300(260-340) hence accuracy with my fairway woods really pays off, but usually my ego gets the best of me and I can't help but reach for that driver.

    • I've been thinking about buying a hitting mat for home indoors use. I currently only got a small patch of some mat I bought years ago and stand on a wooden platform. It'd be nice having a mat to stand on and hit from. After some searching, I see Fiberbuilt often being praised. Not sure if I can get hold of it easily here, and buying internationally can get expensive for a mat that's already quite pricey (~$800). The Wittek Quattro is also usually favorably mentioned, and at half the price (~$400) of the Fiberbuilt. Anyone have experince with this mat? Any other suggestions?
    • It just occurred to me that the last time I was serious about golf, my woods were made of….wood! Also interestingly (to me anyway) as I shopped for “woods”, mostly on eBay, I found that all the clubs in really nice cosmetic/aesthetic shape (good finish, nice club face, good grip) were woman’s clubs. Seems they either take really good care of them or don’t use them much.    And lastly, for now anyway, I went to a range today that has Top Tracer monitors at all the stations - another “new” development that may have been around for quite a while, but this was a first for me. I found it useful although I’m sure I only scratched the surface of its capabilities.
    • Agreed. For me, the feel was introduced to get the arms moving down from the top. It wasn't necessarily a "get it in front of the hip" explanation as the correct position but more for an exaggerated feel to get rid of the earlier issue.
