I am DEFINITELY not a golf gear addict.

I just picked up a set of Ping I3s off Ebay this spring to replace my 20 year old set of Tommy Armour 845s. I also bought a set of Cleveland wedges SW/LW CG14 Black pearl to replace my 15 year old ones. Finally I also bought a set of Cleveland Ultralight Driver (SL290) 3 wood and 5 wood all with the Miyizaki shafts (I love them btw!!!).

Some things I do spend money on but if I buy something new, I'm selling the old stuff on Ebay shortly thereafter.

There are tons of gear ****s in golf, so I'm sure there are folks out there with collections that make yours look positively sparse. ;-) I purchased a 3w about a week ago (wanted to replace my 4w), but other than balls and such, I haven't made a gear purchase in over eight years. When I purchased GI irons, I sold my MP33s. Wish I hadn't done that, as now I'm thinking of ditching my irons and buying something new....MP-59s probably. I've never liked the cavity backed clubs I'm hitting now, but I succumbed to peer pressure when my handicap skyrocketed after my play/practice time fell to once/week. Why did I buy GI irons? Because I striped them during a demo day at our club. I'm convinced that manufacturers spray some kind of chemical in the air during demo events and it makes golfers hit every shot on the screws, thus leading to expensive purchases. Two rounds later and the pixie dust is gone. What a scam!

Nope, I buy what I need when I need it.  My golfing partner is just the opposite.  He's addicted to garage sale golf gear.  Last weekend he gave me two Ping 1 irons that he didn't want and last month an old persimmon 3 wood.   All garage sale clubs.  He's got so much golf junk accumulated he's started giving it away to help reduce the clutter in his garage. But it's only increasing the clutter in mine.  I suggested he put them on Ebay or donate them to the "buy a club for $5 bucks and donate to charity" bucket at the course pro shop.

Oh hell yes. I must have 4+ grand worth of golf clubs. Three sets of irons, 2 drivers with a third coming for my bday this month. Two 3 woods, Two 5 woods,  3, 4, 5 G10 hybrids, 3 and 4 DX-I hybrids,  A WS 8875 Mallet, 8881 Blade, SC 009 blade, Seemore SI-4 blade, 4 Vokey Wedges, 3 Cleveland 588DSG wedges, and 5 forged Edel wedges coming either friday or monday. An Ogio Kingpin, a Titleist Team Canada stand bag, a Ping leather staff bag (one of those real big tour ones), and a UNB Red Devils Callaway bag.

Then there is 6 pairs of size 14 golf shoes, golf clothes, umbrellas, head covers (Boston Bruins headcovers for the woods, driver, hybrids and putter), all the souvenir bnall markers and divot tools I buy from different courses, the 10 dozen premium balls in the garage, and 200 or so 'practice' balls, which are all mid range to premium (Gamers, Prov1's bought dirt cheap, warbirds, Srixon q-stars).

In reality, its way, way too much, and most of it was not needed. But im in no way taking food off my table, im not missing bill payments, or digging into my savings. I can afford it. I was the same way with hockey and baseball. I bought every new stick, bat, glove that innovated in any way. Hell, im waiting for the new Rocketballz hockey sticks (yep, TM is making hockey sticks now) to hit the market, I will definitely be picking up a couple.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
